I use mine all the time for surfing, mail and such. But if I were going to school and needing a device to help me, I'd recommend a netbook over an iPad, simply because the iPad is best as a consumer of data, and you need to work with it to find work arounds to create data. You have to get creative to print and transfer files. You can only read file types that there is an app for, etc.
I would recommend an inexpensive netbook for now, and save the iPad as a graduation gift to yourself

You'll get lots of opinions with your question.
My opinion is that it's not hard to create data. The Pages, Numbers, and Keynote apps are terrific. Further, the iPad knows how to deal with many types of data: PDF, DOCX, JPEG, etc.
If you're looking for speed, the iPad 4 (latest version) is indeed twice as fast as its predecessor. The iPad mini is somewhat slower, but it has stereo speakers, so it all depends on what's important.
I'm on my third iPad, and I've really enjoyed them all.
