Is there some diagnostic programme I can run to see what is going wrong?

    Hi Louise,

See how many of these you can answer...

See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...

    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029

Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?

How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.

Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.

In the Memory tab of Activity Monitor, are there a lot of Pageouts?

    Hi!

i have the same issue - iMac keeps freezing -

    1. no S.M.A.R.T. errors

    2. No indications re: activity monitor

    3. Tons of free space and currently  not using a lot of RAM (Though getting more than my 4 Gig in on the to do list...)

    4. There are some repeating messages in Console but frankly its a bit overwhelming. 4001 messages from 11/7/2012 to 11/12/2012. I've not even used my computer much.

    5. I have 1.8 MB of Pageouts; 861.3 MB of Page-ins - ? Does that mean something significant?

    Any advice appreciated!!!

About this 24 inch, early 2009 iMac:

    10.8.2

    3.06 GHz intel

    4 Gig memory

About this user:  mac user since 1984- this is my 8th mac; used to read macworld cover to cover during highschool, college and grad school which is when I updated to OS 7 via download since it was free for students... it took 2 days. Hung out w/ 7.5.3 for a bit....was underwhelmed by 8, and have been less and less engaged w/ OS news and troubleshooting (hence the iMac rather than the Power PC...) with every added gray hair.

One thing I did notice in the console list was a whole pile of sync errors - and am wondering if the iPads, iPhones, and relic Mac accounts are causing issues.

    No, not the problem.

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...

PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive

    Reboot, test again.

If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.

Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

Also look in these if they exist, some are invisible...

    /private/var/run/StartupItems

    /Library/StartupItems

    /System/Library/StartupItems

    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons

    /Library/LaunchDaemons

    Hi BDAqua,

Thanks for the reply. I very much appreciate your time and ideas on this.

It's taken awhile to try what you suggest since I use my iMac very little lately.

Here's what happened. A little drama on the first try:

Disk Permission Repair #1 - opened is safe boot, started DU, got a disk is unreadable error (determined it was a la cie hard drive; selected eject rather than initialize); verified permissions, and got a message:  Warning:  SUID file system/library/coreS...has been modified and will not be repaired; then Disk Utility crashed. Hard. Force quit wasn't working so I tried to restart the computer and was greeted with a gray screen. Turned off the iMac using the power button; re-booted in safe mode. Let's try this again! :*)

Disk Permission Repair #2 - the la cie drive that i'd ejected above mounted, and because I was curious, I ran DU on it; it is fine. Ran DU on the other various LaCie drives - all OK; ran DU on the iMac hard drive and received the same above warning re: SUID File system/library...etc. That seemed vaguely familiar as happening before in a previous OS and I think its something I can ignore?

Now I'm not sure what to do. when you say, 'look in these if they exist," what am I looking for? All except one seems to exist.

For example, I was able to "go to" /private/var/run/startupitems and most of things were there w/ today's date; while /Library/StartupItems has a bunch of REALLY old stuff dated 2007-2009; the other folders you suggest looking in have a mixed bag of stuff...though I did notice that System/Library/LaunchDaemons the items were mostly all dated 10-2-2012 at 2:27PM....

    Hey, Louise --

Are you still with us?  Please come back and give your answers to BDAqua, OK?

    Correct.

when you say, 'look in these if they exist," what am I looking for?

Mostly things that are not com.apple. dadada

So can I safely delete the files in those folders? or at least those that are not apple?

    • /private/var/run/StartupItems
    • /Library/StartupItems
    • /System/Library/StartupItems
    • /System/Library/LaunchDaemons
    • /Library/LaunchDaemons

[not to start a new conversation, more to just whine:
why does it seem like this happens with every single mac I've owned?

Awesome for a few years and then as new OS are added, frequency of crashing increases, often exponentially...I go through this kind of troubleshooting, patch stuff together, sometimes revert back to an early OS, remove all externals, add RAM, etc. and finally break down and buy a new machine.

Now I remember why I was dragging my feet on this latest OS...]

    Carolyn --

not to start a new conversation,

I hate to tell you this, but you already have.  Our Original Poster here, Louisefromwickenham, has been completely threadjacked by your questions before we were able to hear back from her.

    Sorry!

    Apologies to Louise, etc.

Okay so now what? I very much appreciate anyone's help.

How do I create a new thread?

Do i cower away without an answer...?

Toss the iMac off a cliff?

    Other?

    Thanks!!!

Hey Carolyn, don't take offence, ~Bee is one of the sweetest helpers here, she's just trying to help.

You can start a new Question of your very own here...

PS. I was hoping to hear back from Louise to see if yours & hers were identical problems or not, that's where the confusion can start.

    BDA, thanks for understanding.

Carolyn, with your own thread, you'll get the individual attention you deserve.
