To me this indicates Numbers does not know the format (or it is corrupt). Try saving from Excel as a different format than the one you just tried.

Thank you Wayne. The "save as" worked fine in the PDF format. I think that numbers had a problem with my .xls file due to it being a 1997 version(Office97). Because it populated the spreedsheet with no hesitation. I also had purchased Office:mac2011 to run on my Mac mini but have never installed. When installed it obviously had no problem with the file.
