What model of iMac do you have?

The late 2009 iMacs have an SD card slot on the right side, just below the CD/DVD slot.

Then your model of iMac almost certainly pre-dates the inclusion of the SD card slot in iMacs. Enter the serial number of your iMac here:

and it will tell you what model you have. Only the late 2009 iMacs and later models have that slot.

You can purchase a USB card reader (which has to be compatible with the type/format card you are using) and simply use that - it works great; I've been using one with my Canon card for some time.
