thunderbolt in MBPs do not seem to behave well with Dell ultrasharp series. http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/peripherals/f/3529/p/19458525/201488 89.aspx
I have a U3011, and my MBP retina 15inch
(10.8.2) only sends YPbPr space to the display via miniDP to DP cable instead of RGB. For all professional purposes this is useless. Nobody from Apple or Dell is willing fix this.
U3011 only uses HDMI 1.3, so you won't get the full resolution. I also have used a mini-DP to dual-DVI adaptor. It gets RGB from MBP, the text is all garbled for anything above 1600x1000 .
I am at my wits end.
I've managed to run the full 2560x1600 resolution from the Mac Mini via Mini DP to DP and that runs well. There are a few strange issues with the DP port though on the Dell and they are:
1. The Infrared signal on the Mac can sometimes get messed up by the monitor - no idea how this happens as it doesn't have an IR port but what sometimes happens is if the Mac and then monitor go to sleep and you then wake them up, the Apple Remote then fails to work unless you continuously press a button on the remote very close to the IR receiver of the Mac - then all's okay again until everything goes to sleep once more.
2. From time to time, after waking from sleep, the monitor fails to receive the signal from the Mac so you have to remove the cable and reinsert it.
Very annoying for two expensive bits of kit.

Alan - Can you check the color (RGB/YPrPb) settings from the OSD menu? Are you running 10.8.2? In system information, can you see if the display is being treated as television (look under graphics/display).?

Hello and happy new year
I own a Dell 3007WFP and a Dell U2711.
I'm planning to buy a new MacMini. Do you think will be imposible
to run both at the same time with 2560x1440 resolution?
Or it would be much better to buy a MacPro... is they finalyyyyy present a new model....

From my knowledge you can only run one monitor at full 2560x1440 resolution as that res is only available via the mini-dp/thunderbolt output. Two have two monitors running at that res then you would need to purchase something like this: http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/mac/choice/

That neans it's better to buy an iMac27, connect only one dell30 and sell the second U2711...
... or just wait for the new MacPro (but there are no infos about Apple's future plans)
thanks a lot
Hey, check out this thread if you have a u3011 and are having issues with YPbPr rather than RGB on your macbook pro
