Update provisioner to 10.8.2. Also, what apple Id is being requested? Sign out of the Id on the iPads ahead of time if it is the students.

I am updating as we speak...The iPad is not requesting just the password it has two blank fields for both Apple ID and password. I will let you know if 10.8.2 helps.

Updated to 10.8.2 and also signed the student apple id out before refreshing to no avail. Any other ideas?

Unchecking the apps and refreshing the device to remove them, the rechecking the apps and putting them back works. However all app data is lost. Anyone any other suggestions?

I am experiencing the same thing. I get asked for my Apple ID and password and then the App closes.
This happened after I update my operating system to 10.6.8 and Sync'd my iphone. This is only on a number of apps such as Whats App. I have reset my password so I know that what I am typing in is correct.
