Use the RENDER MANAGER to clean up anything FCP isn't referencing. But if you still don't have enough space...get another hard drive...or a bigger one.

Yes it's safe…and probably necessary. Use Render Manager in the Tools drop down.
Do you have another drive that you can use as your scratch and/or render disk? Cahnge those in FCP Sytems Settings.

I had this problem some months ago and it turned out that it was all caused by a still that I'd unintentionally imported at very high res. I deleted it, re-imported at a smaller size and suddenly everything was fine. May not be the cause of your problem, but worth a look I think.

You can also just go to the render folder(s) and manually delete them.
