Yes, I have tried both Preview and QuickLook. Preview states that "The file cannot be opened" and QuickLook only shows an icon of a jpeg-document and not the image.
I have also rebooted the QuickLook server and purged its cache (via Terminal) - but to no avail.

Hate to say this but it sure sounds like the files got corrupted some how.
What if you tyr yo pen it in Safari. Select one of the images and right click it and then in Open With select Safari. What happens?

Thanks, but its the same - they cannot be opened.
The files are definitely corrupted.
I am wondering if anyone has a clue as to why and what to do to repair them.

If you Web search for something like 'repair jpg mac' you'll get a number of hits for both articles discussing the problem and for software (both free and commercial).
I've never had to try and do this so I can't comment on what might work but its a place to start.
