First you need an app on your pad that will open Word docs. I suggest Pages. You can buy it in the App Store.
Use the File sharing feature of iTunes. Start iTunes on the computer you normally sync with and connect your iPad. Select your iPad in the left column of iTunes and in the right column select General. Scroll down to file sharing and copy the files you want on your iPad to this area of iTunes. They will be cited onto your iPad and will appear when you open Pages.

Google an itunes app called Splashtop 2 - Desktop Remote. I suggest you read tech media and user reviews. It's inexpensive, great and with wifi you can download your word document and work on it as if you're at your computer.
