I tried a DFU restore as a new phone and set it up with the following options:
1. Answered "No" to enable location services.
2. Answered "No" to enable iCloud
3. Did not add any email addresses or hook up to an Exchange server.
4. Did not sync with any address books.
5. Charged the phone to 100%
6. Let the phone sit "idle" for 5 hours. No calls or texts were made.
It went down to around 90% but even more concerning was that the difference between standby and usage was only a few minutes. Since a fresh DFU install didn't do anything I restored my regular image and fully charged the phone again and let it sit overnight. The next morning it showed my usage at 9 hours 53% charge (with me never touching the phone). There has got to be some bug in IOS with certain phones where it won't properly let it go to sleep.
I went to the Apple store at lunch today and they were pretty useless. After first telling me this was normal I was told that they could sell me a battery but it may or may not fix my problem.
Has anyone tried downgrading back to IOS 5? That my be my only hope.

You cannot downgrade to iOS 5. Did they not offer you an exchange? You have a 1 year warranty unless you have AppleCare then its 2 years. If DFU didnt fix it and you didnt add anything back other than default apps clearly the device has something wrong with it I would say/ Otherwise poor coverage area? Bad sim (assuming you are GSM user)? Also some users have had Apple genius restore/DFU their devices and solved the problems. I would at the very least request they do that.

Did you ever say if you did the DFU restore? Player was asking if you updated your iOS over wifi or via itunes I believe. If you have not tried a DFU I would recommend you do so. You can search for instructions on exactly how to do it. That has solved this for a lot of users. The standby and usage being the same it typical of a corrupt exchange mail account. I suspect you have already into that though. If you have exhausted the other recommended options I would try the DFU next.

This phone just came with iOS6, but everything was via WIFI, not iTunes. I haven't done DFU on this device but I had tried it on previous replacements. Is my Gmail or AOL an exchange account?

Ok so when I had iOS 6 I had battery drain issues. No fix anywhere on the web was able to correct it.Now when the update(6.0.1) came out my joy knew no bound but once I updated it and started using I understood that the battery problem still persists.I took my phone to the apple service center and the apple guy ran a few tests on its battery and showed me the result. My battery passed all tests so there's no problem in the battery. It chews up 1% of my battery every 3-4 minutes. On standby mode 1 % every 9 or so minutes.Anyone else got the same problem ? Or a solution ??

Ever since I upgraded to IOS 6 and then to IOS 6.0.1, I was facing following issues on my iPhone 4S
1. Wifi greyed out
2. Battery drain
It looks like both of above issue are related i.e. if wifi option is greyed out, battery drain is much faster (more than 70% overnight with zero usage). If wifi option is available, battery depletes by hardly 30% over 8 hours of daytime use. I noticed it coz one fine day wifi on my 4S suddenly decided to work.
Upon wondering what may have caused my phone to shower favor on me was the difference in temperature. I traveled to a cooler place to spend weekend with my parents.
As soon as I came back, wifi and battery issues were there to haunt me again.
I remembered reading on Apple Communities forum suggesting to switch off the phone and leave in refrigerator for 15-20 min. Though reluctant initially, I decided to give it a shot. To my utter surprize, it works!!
Not a permanent solution, but it works! Though its a short lived happiness, I've found this solution consistently working.
Till the time Apple comes up with permanent fix, my phone is going to refrigerator everytime I have wifi grey out issue.

10% for 5 hours wouldn't be so bad if the phone calculated the battery life accurately. Unfortunately that first 10% accounts for 20-30% of my battery life. And thats while not in use. I downloaded the Carat app yesterday and am keeping my fingures crossed that it finds something. Is it able to spot system processes that are bogging the phone down?
Right now I'm down to 21 hours standby with 10% battery with very little use (with a crazy 15 H usage stat). And this is with a 40 minute plug in while driving too.
