Hello, so we have a 2008 imac and we have never updated our osx. Is this something you need to do?  I always thought mac would inform us of upgrades like they do with iphones and ipads.

We have a 2008 iMac and have never updated our osx.  Is this neccesary? I keep seeing Lion and Mountain Lion.  Our computer has had problems. Will this help to fix them.  Also, do we need to update to Lion and then to Mountain Lion or can we just go to Mountain Lion...and yes, technically I am a technical idiot.  Thank you for any help! cheers
