And the problem persists. My 4S was suddenly struck down with this bug yesterday - months after "upgrading" (and I use the word in the loosest possible sense) to iOS6, but now long after 6.0.1. It is scandalous that Apple haven't fixed this yet - or at least provided a facility for upgrading to iOS5 for affected users.
Remember the days when it was Microsoft that had the reputation for buggy system software and a "don't care" attitude to customers?

Unfortunately it seems to have been upgrading to 6.0.1 that resulted in my phone developing this particular malady

My iPhone 4 has been stricken with this problem now as well. I have tried everything short of putting my phone in the freezer because even if it does work (abeit for a short time) I feel that it is ludicrous to have to result to that type of "fix".
I wrote a letter to Tim Cook requesting immediate acknowledgment and a fix for this issue.

Ok... I have been giving some detals about the progress of the problem on the iOS beta for developers, today was presented the beta number 2 of iOS 6.1 and let me tell you that dosen't solve anything...
we will have to wait way more...

Like many of you, I took the phone into the Apple store for a Genius Bar appointment. They tried a variety of things including a full restore, (although he didn't attempt to put it in the freezer) and determined it was a hardware issue and replaced the phone. So far wifi and Bluetooth are working fine. Taking it to the Apple store wound up being the most effective solution for me.

That is good for you, but my phone is out of warranty. It drives me nuts that they created a software problem that damaged people's electronics and refuse to acknowledge that. Now, I'm stuck with a phone that WAS in perfect working order until the upgrade and now is extremely crippled in it's functionality, with no recourse. Thanks Apple!

Ever since I upgraded to IOS 6 and then to IOS 6.0.1, I was facing following issues on my iPhone 4S
1. Wifi greyed out
2. Battery drain
It looks like both of above issue are related i.e. if wifi option is greyed out, battery drain is much faster (more than 70% overnight with zero usage). If wifi option is available, battery depletes by hardly 30% over 8 hours of daytime use. I noticed it coz one fine day wifi on my 4S suddenly decided to work.
Upon wondering what may have caused my phone to shower favor on me was the difference in temperature. I traveled to a cooler place to spend weekend with my parents.
As soon as I came back, wifi and battery issues were there to haunt me again.
I remembered reading on Apple Communities forum suggesting to switch off the phone and leave in refrigerator for 15-20 min. Though reluctant initially, I decided to give it a shot. To my utter surprize, it works!!
Not a permanent solution, but it works! Though its a short lived happiness, I've found this solution consistently working.
Till the time Apple comes up with permanent fix, my phone is going to refrigerator everytime I have wifi grey out issue.

Yashjas! I had EXACTLY the same case for my iPhone4S/6.0.1 - Grayed out wifi and the battery drain!. And freezer trick worked for me. One difference - I did it only one time. It was enough - probably I am just living in more cold place then you are And again, I can not beleive that Apple doing nothing to fix this bug. It is so stupid!

Apparently Apple (UK) are now aware of this issue and are taking examples of the problem to attempt to 'fix it'.
I'm off up to the store on Sunday
Edit - no 'genius bar' bookings available until mid next week

I have the exact same issue. 3GS bluetooth stopped working after 'downgrading' to iOS 6.0.1!
so Apple is secretly trying to force all 3GS out of the market?! but wait! the same issue is occurring with my 6mth old iPad 3!
It's definitely a iOS issue and needs to be fixed asap!
I'm one disappointed Apple supporter now..
MacBook 2006, MacBook Pro 2011, iPhone 3GS, iPad 3.

THE ONLY THING THAT CAN HELP U GET YOUR WIFI BACK (works with greyed out wifi plus valid wifi adress on info]
1 charge your iphone
2 turn flash on video recording
3 start recording
4 wait until iphone discharged , repeat for at least 1 hour
5 switch on your iphone
all credit goes to H1nt on tis forum page 14
P: WORKED also with freezing for only short time, avoid freezing because moisture will damage your iphone 110/100 and moisture will form itself wether u put it inside a bag or not

Will give H1nt suggestion a go, having had a very poor experience at the Genius Bar in the Apple Store in Brent X, North London, where they correctly identified my problem without me saying a word. They then proceded to deny any larger Apple 4S/ 6.0.1 issue!
Was told to wipe phone clean and then reinstall all software etc. Did so, and no change - wifi still greyed out
Incredibly frustrating. Will not upgrade iPad in case the same thing happens.
Am now in San Fran, so will try a store here and will report back if any better service/ result

Having the same problem, my WIFI is greyed out. Updated to 6.0.1 several days ago, but the issue started to occur just last night.
I tried putting it in the freezer trick as some have suggested and it worked for about an hour until the phone rose to ambient temperature again. Not going to try that again as it is a ridiculous fix.
Hard resets, soft resets, reseting network settings, letting the battery drain, none of these work for me and I'm out of warranty. So I'll just have to keep monitoring this thread and hope that Apple decides to fix...
I'm coming from Android and I expected Apple to be a step up somehow. But in light of this problem it seems they're no better than any average device maker, Apple devices are jsut shinier.
