ncalliari, thank you for the tip. For me reinstaling 10.8.2 seems to work.

I have the mac mini for 9 days now. Usually working on it in the evening. Had blinking at least once an hour. Lasting from 2 to 10 seconds.

Today, when I turned it on around 5:00PM only few minutes after it was blinking for 8-10 seconds.

Then, I reinstalled 10.8.2 update. After install finished I did go to Disk Utility and repaired disk permissions.

While repairing disk permissions the history log mentioned the word graphics several times.

I'm really not knowledgeable that much to know if that could have made the difference.

Now is 10:45PM and the screen hasn't blinked once since I did the above.

Comparing with 5-7 blinking last evening during the same time.

So far so good. I will keep you posted how it performs in the coming days.

Re-installed 10.8.2 again - no good - just had a blink after about an hour.  I had the issue with the stock 4G of RAM, and now with 16.  I will try to take out one of the 8G sticks to see if that alleviates the problem.

I have the same problem (blink) and my monitor is an LG 246 WH, connected directly through HDM to HDMI.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news - but:

in order to use my new i7 and 1 year old HP monitor I had to change from HDMI port to Thunderbolt port with an mindvi to dvi adaptor.  I thought that burried away in my pile of computer parts was was one of the mindvi -> dvi adaptors and when I found it I remembered why it was there!

Almost two years ago my wife needed a new computer for some freelance work she was doing.  Before I recommended a Mini I did a lot of reading on the forums.  This very problem was around then - Apple was "researching" it and everyone hoped would have a fix soon. The only solution if you had the problem problem was to use mindvi -> dvi.  When she bought her Mini I gave her an Apple branded Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adaptor "in case we need it for something".  My wife's mini work just fine using the HDMI port.

It appears that Apple or Intel never found the solution.

So for those of you waiting for the fix - obviously I can't say for sure but - I would start thing of other ways to accomplish the same thing.  For some the Thunderbolt to DVI solution will work, for others Thunderbolt to HDMI will work, for others some other work around may be necessary.  There are always, or almost always, workarounds for this stuff.

The fact that this issue has been around for so long with no resolution and no real acknowledgement from Apple however is inexcusable.  I will keep my new machine because using the HDMI port to feed my monitor is not absolutely necesary and by the time I need more Thunderbolt ports there should be inexpensive Thunderbolt Hubs available.  Right now I run external HDs on USB3.  For anyone who absolutely requires using the HDMI port to drive a TV or monitor you should think about returning it to Apple if it's new enough and keep returning it untill you get a machine/adaptor combination that works.  And for those with older machines who are waiting for Apple to fix this I think you should start demanding that Apple fix the problem or replace your machines - there have with each generation of machines, at least for the last 2 years+/-  been those that worked fine off the HDMI port and those that didn't.  With Apple's help line still in the dark I find it hard to believe that Apple takes this seriously and is not just appeasing people by having engineers look at the problem - I may be wrong, I have been in the past!

In any case I have now "solved" my problem - had a good rant early in the morning - and wish you all the best of luck!

I'm having the random black screen blinking as well.  I have a Dell 30" attached to the Mini and it's been working fine for over a week and suddenly started blinking to a black screen and back every few minutes.  It's as if the mini completely loses the connection and then finds the monitor.  Very annoying that it starts doing this after a week of no issues.  I'm using the dual-link DVI adapter from Apple.

I also tried to reinstall 10.8.2 with no improvement.

What are people's thoughts on sending the unit back for refund until a fix is found?

I had no choice but to return my unit because the HDMI port was flaky and the Thunderbolt port died totally. Easy decision for me.

If it's true that this problem has been around in minis for years, then maybe I'm mistaken in hoping that Apple will resolve this soon. I hope they do resolve it because I've hung on to my Thunderbolt to DVI adapter and my 16 GB memory upgrade.

The mini is a perfect choice for me because I don't believe in bundling the display and computer together. The monitor outlasts the usefullness of the computer by years. I also don't like Apple's glossy displays.

After going through the enormous waste of time setting up the mini and getting extras like MySQL and Perl to function again, and then having to roll back any deltas to my MacBook, and then having to wipe and reinstall the OS on the mini, I don't intend to go through that again unless Apple states that they have a fix and I can be assured the next mini will work and be worth the premium I pay.

The time expense is why I'm not interested in exchanging minis ad nauseum until I get a unit that works.

Apple doesn't value my time, but I do.

Just another person with this problem on a brand-new mini and a Samsung monitor, connected by HDMI. I get a black screen for 2-5 seconds a couple of times a day, although today for the first time had snow in the pattern: snow, black screen, snow black screen, snow, normal display. The display seems to recover every time, but with the addition of snow (new as of today, on a week-old machine), I'm wondering if there is some kind of slow hardware failure going on. I'm using an Amazon brand HDMI cable.

I certainly hope I don't have to return the machine, because I've just gotten it set up with all my software, including Parallels and a system builder Windows 7 installation that can't be transferred to another motherboard.

Could the problem be related to Turbo Boost? Could it be related to the Fusion Drive?

The problem has definitely not been around in past Mini's. I've owned all the mini's (except for the very first one), and I never had this blinking out problem. Also, I've already exchanged my Mac Mini at the apple store for a new one, and I still have the same problem.

Everyone should be patient cause Apple will take care of all of us. Just wait til the exact problem is found and fixed.

It has nothing to do with the fusion drive (I don't know how that would even affect the video out), as there's been many of us who have the basic build MM, and have the same issue.

One suggestion I've seen in a few places is to use the Mini DisplayPort output of the Mac Mini with a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter (and then with a HDMI cable)... but I can't say I've seen anyone saying "Yep, been running it for a few days and it has fixed it" yet.

Has anyone suffering from the HDMI output issues tried a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter?  Did it fix your issues?  And does the Mac Mini do audio output in its Mini DisplayPort, or would USB/Toslink be needed?

Apple stores sell a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter for $34.95, so for anyone going to a Genius bar about the HDMI issue it might be worth trying to get them to give you one!

Not a lot of help if you want to run extended desktop though, as I do.

My Mac Mini is currenty boxed and awaiting collection for return to Apple, as they wish to 'capture' it to carry out tests. Once they get it they will send me a replacement, pity I have to wait but hey ho, at least they are looking into the problem.

I'm running dual monitors - the primary monitor is mini DP --> DVI, and the second is HDMI --> DVI.  I've had no issues with the mini DP to DVI adapter, while the HDMI out has the blinking/snow issues.

Oh I agree Philip Tyler, using a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter is a bodge and will lose dual monitor... but at least it gets you one non-blanking display :).

I'm surprised they want your Mini back… and I'd bet that your replacement has the same issue!

And what about the image quality between both monitors?
