Just purchased the new nano, synched Itunes, can only use earbuds at the moment to test it (units I own have the 30 pin adapter) and there is no sound.

Everything else seems to be functioning.  Tried earbuds which came with it and others that I have.

So frusterating, please help.

And you are positive that you are plugging the earbuds all the way in?  If so, I'd recommend returning the 7G Nano as soon as possible for a replacement.

I also had no sound and thought I had tried everything with my new (Feb. 2013) ipod Nano-7th Gen. I contacted Apple Support, and received great suggestions which I followed. However, the clue to solving my problem was the advice from planb77. The entire metal part of the earpod jack must be inserted into the headphone port. The Nano is so small and fragile-looking that I was hesitant to really push in the pin. However, I have perfect sound from my Nano now. Thanks and God bless you, planb77!
