Did you do what nomoreinflu suggested in his post? Also be sure to set the burn speed down to no greater than 4x when you use that preference pane to reduce burn errors.

    nomoreinflu:

Thanks for that tip.  Hadn't gone into that pref pane in iDVD so am learning something new today here.

My preferences are the same as shown by nomoreinflu.  I am still encountering the problem with old themes with iDVD on my new MBP that uses Mountain Lion.  I installed iDVD as a custom install from my iLife 11 original disk.  With that I had themes 6 and 7 only with the older themes greyed out. I clicked on one of the greyed out themes and received the message that I could get an update, but it goes to the apps store and simply stops there.

So I copied the themes 1-5 from the Application Support/iDVD/Themes folder that I have on my older MBP with Snow Leopard.  I then copied those themes into the Themes folder on my new MBP.  I did a repair permissions from disk utility and rebooted.  However when I open up iDVD themes from 6 and 7 are ok but the old themes all appear just as a yellow triangle.  There seems to be a broken link there somewhere.

I tried downloading update 7.0.1 and opened it with Pacifist.  There were only Themes 5,6,7, in there. I tried adding themes 5 out of 7.0.1 into the Application Support/iDVD/Themes folder on my MBP with Mountain Lion, tried repairing permissions (none to repair) rebooted and then tried iDVD, but while themes 6 and 7 are ok, it does not recognise the Themes 5 folder or any of the older themes.

Any suggestions as to what I can do next?   Philip

Can you try deleting user caches?

    To delete iDVD caches:

    1. Click on Finder

    2. Click on the Go menu and hit <option> key to show 'Library'.. and select 'Library'

    3. Go to Caches folder and delete 'com.apple.idvd' folder

    To delete theme caches:

    1. Click on Finder

    2. Click on the Go menu and hit <option> key to show 'Library'.. and select 'Library'

    3. Go to 'Application Support\iDVD' and delete 'Installed Themes' folder

I put back themes 1-5 taken from my MBP with Snow Leopard and did what you suggested - deleted IDVD cashes and deleted theme cashes, but it makes no difference.  When I go into iDVD themes for 6 and 7 are ok but the "old themes", rather than being greyed out just show a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark inside it.

Not sure what to try now...

Try putting a copy of the iWeb folder in your Home/Library/Application Support folder, set the link as described in nomoreinflu's post, repair disk permissions and reboot. Then try iDVD again.

I just loaded IDVD onto my new Mountain Lion Imac by copying the app from my old Snow leapord MBP

same as you there no themes attached & I dint know where to look for them

So I uninstalled it & got my out my  ilife 9 DVD & did a custom install of IDVD from there

there was a drop down option on IDVD for "  iDVD extra content " which is the 1-5 older themes

I selected this to include in the install ( I didnt install anything else not even iweb) & once installed it all worked fine including access to all the themes

You are fortunate to have ilife 09.  I have ilife 11 and with that it does not give the option of iDVD extra content.

How strange Extra Content (Themes 1 - 5) doesn't show up in the app store.

    Here's what should happen.

    1. In iDVD, under Old Themes, click on one of the grayed out thumbnails.

    2. Download Now.

    3. The app store will launch.  (Wait for it to check for updates)

    4. In the app store, click on Updates and you should see IDVD Extra Content listed under Software Update.

Or it might be these steps.

    1. In iDVD, under Old Themes, click on one of the grayed out thumbnails.

    2. Download Now.

    3. The app store will launch.

    4. In the app store, click on Updates (Wait for it to check for updates)

    5. You should see IDVD Extra Content listed under Software Update.

I tried these steps but iDVD Extra Content does not appear anywhere on the Updates page of the App Store app. Any idea where to find those themes, apart from the iLife '09 disc?

After I used Pacifist to install missing themes from my iLife '09 disc, the iDVD Extra Content did appear in the Software Updates section of the updates page in the App Store app.

That's odd.  Once you have all of the themes installed and don't need it then you can see the Software Update.  Thanks for the feedback.

This is an old thread but as I was searching for some info came here and wanted to add some possibly helpful information.  I too have a newish MBA with 10.8.5 (mountain lion) and an older MBP that had iDVD on it with ALL of the themes installed and working 1-7 (none greyed out).  Needed iDVD on MBA and dragged the app from MBP to MBA and copied themes from library/application support/iDVD and came to the same problem as the others here.  Themes from iDVD6 & 7 installed fine but the rest did not.  The program works fine but with just those themes.

So after reading what EventSound did, installed from iLife 09 DVD - I dug around my install discs as I've been using macs and idvd etc for a long time.  I found ilife 08 - (did not have ilife 09).  I thought I'd try it and see.

Guess what - iLife '08 also has ALL of the idvd themes on it.  So what I did was use an external drive to put the ilife 08 install dvd in and plugged it into my macbook air with mountain lion.  (I did delete all iDVD themes and the program so I'd do a fresh install & repaired permissions)  I selected 'custom install' of course and installed iDVD only - but selected the 'iDVD extra content' and checked that too.  Now everything installed but on ilife 08 the version of idvd is 7.0 and cannot be opened in mountain lion but that's ok, as I said, it installed fine and then I updated idvd to idvd 7.0.4 (because I had already downloaded that updater from the apple website) and that was compatible with mountain lion and cool beans, I have ALL themes available in iDVD on my macbook air 10" with mountain lion 10.8.5.

Then I ran software  update and updated to 7.1.2.

I also notice, Old Toad, that once I had already installed all the themes (1-5) - the old themes - THEN, software update/App store provides a link to download them.  Still does that and it's now the end of October 2013.

So, to reiterate - ilife '08 install DVD (retail) has all the iDVD themes included as well.  There is a simple work-around for mountain lion - just install one of the updates and you are good to go.  It worked for me with MBA running 10.8.5
