I teach a language and am trying to make a word list on one side and then next to it an empty line next to the word. i can't seem to get it to work in numbers.

open the inspector by clicking the blue "i", and go to the yellow "table" tab. There is a section titled "cell borders" that lets you customize your spreadsheet like you were talking about. In the image, I have chosen the option that will let you control the lines for students to answer on. You can change the line style, thickness, and color for each side/top/bottom line that you can select within the cell borders section.
