I have tried opening iphoto for a week now, since my last update.  The colorful circle just spins and I get the message "not responding".  I have tried to hold down command +options and then click on the iphoto option - nothing.  It does not even give me the command to recreate the library.  I need to get this opened!  Christmas presents are in iphoto!  please help

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09:

    Option 1

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database. IF that's not working for you, then perhaps you need to keep the keys depressed longer.

    If that fails:

    Option 2

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)

This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

    Regards

If you can't get iPhoto to launch to rebuild give this troubleshooting fix a try:  make a temporary, backup copy (if you don't already have a backup copy) of the library and try the following:

1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your

         User/Home/Library/ Preferences folder.

2 - delete iPhoto's cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your

         User/Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.

    home.PNG

3 - launch iPhoto and try again.

NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding down the Option key when launching iPhoto.  You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.

NOTE 2:  In Lion and Mountain Lion the Library folder is now invisible. To make it permanently visible enter the following in the Terminal application window: chflags nohidden ~/Library and hit the Enter button - 10.7: Un-hide the User Library folder.

I too am having a similar issue.  I'ts been going on for a couple weeks now.  I thought maybe upgrading to Mountain Lion would solve the issue and it seemed to since I was able to open iPhoto once, I believe, but it soon reverted back to this.  My iPhoto attempts to open with the app window coming up and the progress wheel (white) spinning but I soon get the beach ball about 10 seconds later and the app hangs there until I force quit it.  I've tried reinstalling the OS from the app store.  After thats finished and I launch iPhoto I get a message saying there are inconsistencies in the library and it asks if I want to repair it.  Unfortunately I cant because it hangs and it wont allow me to push the repair button.  I tried tossing the iPhoto app in the trash and reinstalling from the app store but that didn't do anything.  Trying to repair through iPhoto Library Manager also causes it to hang when it launches iPhoto.  I also tried Old Toad's fix above but that didn't fix it either. It did however give me the same result as reinstalling the OS where it asks me if I want to repair the library but as before, it hangs and I have to force quit.  Super frustrating.  I fortunately have it backed up on multiple drives so I know my pics are safe but not being able to view them or add more is annoying.  thewadster, if you end up finding something that works can you please post it?  I'm at wits end with this

    Try this:

Starting over from scratch with new library

Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:

    1. Open the library package like this.

    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.

    3. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window.

This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

It should have come out like this:

Starting over from scratch with new library

Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:

    1. Open the library package like this.

    open.PNG

    2. Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.

    3. Drag the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the open iPhoto Library package into the open iPhoto window.

    iPhotolibcontents.PNG

This will create a new library with the same Events (but not necessarily the same Event names) as the original library but will not keep the metadata, albums, books slideshows and other projects.

Note:  your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

Thanks for the suggestions but unfortunately I'm still getting the exact hang when trying to start a NEW library.  I guess that would rule out any issues with my current library??  Here is some of the crash log from when I tried it last.  Let me know if you need more.

Looks like a reinstall of iPhoto is the next step: To do so you'll have to delete the current application and all files with "iPhoto" in the file name with either a .PKG or .BOM extension that reside in the:

    HD/Library/Receipts folder (10.5 and earlier)

    or

    from the /var/db/receipts/  folder (10.6) .

    goreceiptsfolder.PNG

or from the /private/var/db/receipts folder (10.7 or later)

    goreceiptsfolder10.7.PNG

Then install iPhoto from the source it came from originally.

Log in to another user account on your Mac and see if iPhoto will launch without freezing.  If that's unsuccessful go go back to your account and boot into Safe Mode,  Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and see if you can launch iPhoto there.  This is to determine if it's a system issue and not an application issue.

Out of frustration and need to access my photos for Christmas cards I went ahead and formated my drive and performed a clean install of Mountain Lion.  iPhoto worked for a few days but now I'm getting a crash almost immediatley following launch.  I can launch iPhoto as a guest user just fine but it wont launch in safe mode.  Here's some of the crash log:
