I leave my mac and iPad on. Lots of people pass by and just need to click on the Mail icon and there it is - all my emails for them to read!
In Thunderbird, I can read and write my emails and then sign off. All I need to do next time I want to do emails is a single master password.
If a person does not want to use the facility, they need not set up a password in the first instance.
My point is simply that the facility ought to be offered in Mac Mail for folk like me who require it.
I don't want to go to another email client like Thunderbird. I paid for Mac Mail and I want to be ablr to use it.

If you put it to sleep or use screen saver when you leave it, you can set a Password to wake it in...
System Preferences>Security & Privacy>General>Require Password to Wake from Sleep or ScreenSaver.
