I purchased a macbook pro 15 inch retina display a week ago and for the first time found after leaving it for 10 hours or so it was too hot to touch just about anywhere. The fans were not running until I opened it and tried the browser which was especially slow at which point they became very audible. I powered it down and let it cool before restarting. I've been using it now for a couple of hours with no heating problem. I have os 10.8.2. I've been reading similar accounts on the support forums but the most recent was July. I'm still in the return window and so since the overheating occured while unattended am considering taking it back due to the danger of this situation. Anybody else with this problem?

I would definitely return it or exchange it for another one.

I think there is definitely an issue with a lot of rmbps; but we all know apple rarely acknowledge problems.

I am having the same problems with mine hitting 104c often with basic work loads. I'm taking mine to the store sunday and hopefully they'll replace it. If not, it's going on ebay and I'll buy the air.

I think returning it makes sense. It was not recharging and in an open room as opposed to a confined space as I'd seen reported. Very weird. It hasn't happened since I rebooted it so it may be related to the length of time in and out of sleep mode without powering it down. Still, can't be trusted.
