It can be accomplished, but there are consequences if done incorrectly.
These three links illustrate the problems, and solutions,
If, after reading those, you still wish to change your "Short Name",

Here a bit more to the story. I upgraded to mountain lion, then backed up and changed the user account and sharing name which normally changes the home folder name, I did this on a iMac and worked fine.however on the MacBook Pro, I did not delete all files before hand. I then noticed the on start up after entering my password, the magic spectrum wheel taking its time to start up, I thought unusual after it started up, I found the name home I con had not changed, I thought strange. Now I find that when connecting a USB it will not delete files from trash, I suspect all interrelated to changes I made to the user account and sharing folder. I will try what you have advised as it appears to be correct action, if you shed any further advice on this matter would great once again thank you for help

Hi, I too am having a similar issue and am struggling to work out why it is hard just to chnage the name???
I have just bought a new macbook with mountain lion after having a windows laptop for years. When i first set up the system i didnt change my 'home computer' (i dont know what to call this!) name and so in the finder sidebar it comes up with the name 'root'? Is there anyway to change the name of this to my own name??? I have tried going onto 'get info' and change the name and extension that way but it is greyed out and wont let me rename it???
If anyone has any ideas, it would be much appreciated!!!!
