Since upgrading to Mountain Lion, my 2008 copy of Word for the Mac will not run.  It comes up with 'encountered a problem'.  In Pages there isn't a 'Save as' any more  which I normally use to save as a word doc as well as pages.  I used the export as Word doc which it did but this would not open in Word either. Same 'encountered a problem' came up.

Any suggestions???

Thanks

Make sure you have all the updates for Word (one was just recently released, but I doubt that is the problem).

Can you try another user account? I have seen something in the Microsoft User Data folder get corrupted and cause all the Office apps to crash for one reason or another. I've never narrowed it down to a particular object in there, though.

If you don't use Outlook for email, then there usually isn't anything in that folder that cannot be just deleted, if you find it works in another account. You could back up the folder to someplace else, first, so if you do find you need something, you'll have it.

Word 2008 (12.3.5) runs fine on my ML 10.8.2 iMac

You might find it worthwhile looking at the Microsoft Support pages where there are several problems similar to yours.

Perhaps this is a good one to start with.
