Snow leopard will run faster, but mountain lion has better compatibility. We have mountain lion on our mid 2007 imac and it runs alright, but its not as speedy as it was on snow leopard. i'd say it's something like 20% slower, not more than 30%. but it does look a lot more fluid than snow leopard did.

It looks like you haven't had your old Mac (and Snow Leopard) long enough to fall in love with them. So there is an advantage insofar as you would not find some of the Mountain Lion features so different (and they are different) or lose too many programs because they wouldn't work (Rosetta based for instance).
Point is, it's generally considered that Snow Leopard's OS is the best Apple have created. But in keeping with Apple's way of doing things, Snow Leopard will no longer be serviced with updates apart from any necessary security updates. And that means WYSIWYG and will stay that way.
I would be inclined to get to know Snow Leopard and wait a while. Mountain Lion is still bedding down and the new iMacs have yet to be released. Let others be the test bed.
