When the flash drive is inserted, switch to the Finder desktop. If you don't see it on the Finder desktop, choose Go/Computer. This backs you all the way out to Computer level, which is the same as the My Computer level in Windows, so you should be able to see all connected external devices, including the Flash drive.

Don't forget you will need to look up to the top of the screen to access the GO drop down menu. It is not in the finder dialog box. Thanks, Network 23, once I found that drop down menu I was able to get to the flash drive and copy my video files.

By default, all drives are hidden from the desktop. Pretty dumb in my opinion, but that's the default.
From the desktop, choose Finder > Preferences. Turn on the check boxes for all drive types you want to always appear on the desktop.
