    What are you on about? The iPhone is the best phone on the market and if you would own one you would know why people who have an iPhone use there phones more than android users and that's because you can do more with an iPhone than with any phone of the comptetion.

     

    You don't need a contract to enable basic functionality with an iPhone. The problem here in this topic is that Apple is slow to enable support for a brandnew network. The network wen't live a little more than a week ago.

     

    The rumors about Belgacom having to pay for the carrierupdate are just bogus.

    I do own an iPhone, and it's a great phone, but it's true that it has some limitations:

    - Apple likes to keep things as simple as possible. Unfortunately this also has some disadvantages for more advanced users.

    - Apple decides what you can install on your iPhone and what not. Unfortunately there are some great apps and tweaks that won't be approved by Apple and thus can only be installed after jailbreaking your iPhone.

    - Apple products are designed (as much as possible) to work with other Apple products only.

    - The iPhone doesn't have a user-replacable battery, although the battery is worn-out after 12-18 months.

    - The fact that a phone of € 690 or more doesn't even have an FM radio tuner is simply ridiculous.

    - Apple doesn't like to adhere to industry standards. They use their own connectors (30-pin dock connector, lighting connector, thunderbolt, etc.). Third-party accessory manufacturers have to pay a lot of money to Apple. Therefore the accessories are very expensive.

    - etc.

     

    I also recommend to do some comparisons before chanting quotes from Apple like "the best phone on the market":

    For me, it's just a matter of taste. I'm no fanboy at all. I stay critical and I'll still have to decide if my next phone will be an iPhone or not. If Apple continues with jokes like this (programming its phones in such a way that they need to give their permission before you can connect to the LTE network of your carrier, and taking long time and requiring contracts and other ******** before giving this permission), then the choice will be an easy one!

    Those rumours don't come from Apple they come from here on the forum. "Negotiating" doesn't mean someone has to pay. There is totally no mention of what has to be negotated. Negotiating can mean anything like how the update will be distributed.

     

    • That Apple decides what goes on the iPhone is a security measure and if you don'gt want this you can jaiblreak it. Same goes for android where the manufacturer decides what you can do with your phone and decides for you if you are entitled for an update.
    • Apple products are designed to be compatible with products from other manufacturers out of the box. Apple provides services for their products that can't be matched by other companies.
    • My iPhone 4's battery life was still very good after more than 24 months
    • Apple uses it's own connectors because the standards don't match the criteria needed to have the perfect experience. At least iDevices have accesories from third parties something you will hardly find for android phones.
    • Comparison charts don't say anything about what is the best phone. Only user experience can tell you.

    It's clear Apple is blocking this.

    Why would there be a list otherwise with supported carriers.

    They just have to support Belgacom Proximus 4G and done. They sell devices of 800 euros, there is 1 provider in Belgium supporting 4G and Apple is just blocking it, that's really "not done" !

    Just a little reminder for everyone with this problem. Please call Apple Support to tell them again and again about this problem. The problem will only get more priority if a lot of people call.

     

     

    • Go to http://www.apple.com/benl/support/contact
    • Choose 'More information' (next to the screwdriver and wrench)
    • Choose "iPhone"
    • Choose 'take contact with apple support - choose subject'
    • Choose "Internet and Airprint"
    • Choose "subject not listed" and type "4G proximus" or something similar
    • Choose "talk to Apple Support now",(enter your serialnumber and phonenumber) they'll call you back after a few minutes
    • Choose option 1 (talk to a advisor) at the computer-voice-menu

     

    Tell them that the 4G doesn't work for Proximus on your iPhone5, and ask to be transmitted to the Senior Advisor.

    I just called again for the 3th time this week ;-)

     

    So for people calling in for the first time don't be surprised if the helpdesk has never heard of the problem. I just had a person on the telephone who never heard of the problem.

     

    But then when asking for my serial number he saw a trace of the phones that I had already made.

     

    No news so far about the subject. All we can do is sit, wait and call them every day.

    maybe a stupid question: but what about driving/going to germany/london, connect to t-mobile/EE (supported i presume ;-) :-) to enable LTE switch.

     

    Won't it still be available in belgium??

     

    as there are already 7 people on 4G @proximus (probably with carrier 13.1), there must be a difference somewhere!

     

    still hoping...

    I'm afraid that won't help. The presence of the LTE-switch depends on your carrier bundle (.ipcc file), and this matches with your SIM card, not with the network you are connected to. This is logical, because your APN settings (e.g. internet.proximus.be for Proximus) and other features (personal hotspot, visual voicemail, etc.) should stay the same when you are abroad. Inserting a (prepaid) SIM card of Deutsche Telekom will probably enable the switch, but if you re-insert your Proximus SIM card afterwards, the switch will most likely disappear again.

    There are 7 people on carrier 13.1? How did they get that bundle?

     

    Please note that there *is* another possibility for apple to fix this, other than approving Belgacom's .ipcc. As there is no specific iphone Proximus/Belgacom ipcc (there is one for the ipad!), it falls back to the general "carrier" ipcc, which is used by all carriers for who there is no specific ipcc bundle.

     

    If Apple would want to fix this, they could enable the LTE switch in the general Carrier bundle and push that update.

    How do you know that they are on carrier bundle 13.1? Auka told that he saw 7 people with an iPhone 5 on the LTE network of Proximus. Maybe those are roaming customers from Deutsche Telekom, Everything Everywhere or another (by Apple enabled) LTE carrier.

     

    I suppose Apple doesn't want to enable the LTE switch for everyone in Belgium, because when enabling the LTE switch, the 3G switch disappears, which may then lead to complains from people who are on a network/subscription without LTE. A solution could be to enable both a 3G and a LTE switch in iOS 6.0.2/6.1 for everyone in the world, like it would be on a normal smartphone.

    I don't think it works that way. Probably the LTE switch will replace the 3G switch as soon as an LTE network is detected (given the right carrier settings off course).

     

    Keep calling/pushing Apple support and spread the word to blogs/news companies!

    Probably, in the mean of presumption. if these people are not roaming (i asked auka, no reply yet) customers, the only logical deduction is another carrier. Wright ?

     

    As for my concern, three escalations (a lot more of calls...)  @apple already!!
