Connect it to the computer you sync with. When iTunes opens click on the name of your iPhone in the far left frame under DEVICES. Move right to the Summary tab and click on Update.

As you can tell, i am not literate in Mac. I want to put an app on my phone but it says i need ios 5. My current software is 4.2.6. The phone doesn't have the update software icon that Mac website says that it should. can you help me get that on my phone? I think the issue that i am having is that my IMAC has old software and an old itunes version so i am unable to update via computer without updating my software first and then my itunes. is that correct understand of the process on my computer? Any other ideas

What is the Operating System on your Mac, which Mac do you have, and what version of iTunes?
You do not have the icon because it became available with iOS 5.

You can only update to the current version, which is iOS 6.0.1. To do so requires iTunes 10.7, which requires OS X 10.6.8 or higher on your Mac.
As deggie has already pointed out, twice, over the air iOS updates did not become available until iOS 5. You MUST use a computer to update your phone.
If your computer can't handle the requirements, and you decide to perform the update on another computer, keep in mind that you will not be able to restore the backup from your computer or sync with it any more.
