I am trying to copy an aperture library from an iMac to a new mbp.  Could I use the mbp as a location for the vault on the iMac?  I am thinking that I could use the mbp as an external drive, create a vault on it, and then open aperture and restore that vault to aperture on the mbp.  Any ideas?

You can do this using target disk mode. If both of your systems have either FireWire ports or Thunderbolt ports it is fairly straight forward, just connect them using the appropriate cable.

If only one of the systems has FireWire and the other Thunderbolt then you will need a Thunderbolt to FireWire converter,

Once you have the systems connected just copy the library over no need to use a vault.
