I've been less than thrilled with many of the "improvements" in Mountain Lion, and now you can add Mail to that.  It's gotten so slow it's painful.  When mail is downloading from the server it can sometimes take 15-30 seconds after I try clicking on a new message before it gets off the old message.  Overall performance is MUCH slower (had ML on the machine for several months), and in the past couple of weeks it's become painfully slow doing almost anything.  Often, when I'm typing away in a new message it will do the iPad thing of just stopping, then suddenly spurting out the entire sentence you've just typed while it was pausing.

Is there something I need to be doing differently?  I've had to stop using Safari after the ML "upgrade" because it was so slow.  Much better performance from Firefox.  Now I'm thinking I need to look for a new email client.  Any suggestions??

Hey Apple:  Mountain Lion *****...  let's get things fixed, eh?

Huh?  You want me to recover my entire system to fix Mail?  I'm just not that brave, thanks.  I'll keep looking for another solution.

it will fix anything else you got going also. In the mean while you can go into system preferences, select the icloud tab, sign out, then sign back into icloud, then repair permissions from the app Disk Utility.

I have no eartly clue how to do any of that.  I don't use the cloud (sorry, just don't trust it).

Surely there's a way to just fix Mail???

Reinstall Montain Lion. All your data will be safe. Backup just in case as most people do regularly.

    Cheers

I'm having simular issues since updating to ML.  I am hoping my problem is insufficent RAM and I have ordered a 6GB upgrade kit.  My iMac is mid 2007 and came with 2GB, which at the time seemed more than enough.  But ML requires so much in RAM that the system apparently can get so tied up swaping data between virtual memory on the hard drive and RAM, it has little time to do what you expect it to be doing.  If there is another solution I would like to know too.

You better call and find out... i am almost postitive your computer can not handle 6 Gb of ram. And yes RAM would help. You can download the app called mactracker. I do not believe your computer is meant to have 6. I am telling you... you better talk with someone.

Thanks.  You are correct that the Apple specs for my iMac say 4GB maximum, which was based on RAM that was available at the time of manufacturer.  But, new memories have proven to work with specific CPUs, mine included.  OWC guarantees them: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/5300DDR2S6GP/  I subsequently discussed the issue with a tech at my local Apple store without mentioning OWC. He went to the OWC web page and concluded it was the best solution short of buying a new computer, which he expected I would want to do within a year or so.  He did indicate that 4GB would probably solve the problems I am currently having but that 6GB would be better.

It may work... I was under the impression that If the computer was only able to hold 4 Gb of ram... it does not matter if you put 64 Gb in it... your only going to get 4 Gb or ram usage. Also I remember reading something, this is especially true for Ram that was built for 32 bit operating systems. So I am not sure.

    That is correct.

My 6Gb memory upgrade kit arrived today and I installed and it's working fine.  It seems to have made a big difference in speed so far from the 2GB memory I replaced, including Apple Mail.  My iMac is model iMac7,1 (2007) Intel Core 2 Duo 2.8 GHz.

Okay, so this is getting to be an every day event.  Mail is so slow it's literally taking 30-45 seconds to go between messages.  I've trashed all of the mail.plist files except the most recent one, which sometimes helps a little, but within a day it's slow again.  I've got several mail.plist aliases in the folder, which I am unable to get rid of (it won't let me drag them to the trash).  Are they causing this problem?

    Is there another solution?
