I had 10.8 mac mini server downgraded to 10.6.8 as a clone to our old macserver that is failing.  Now that I have the new macmini system fully functional on 10.6.8 I wanted to know how since I already own a license for 10.8 because it came with the original OS.  How do I get it back to 10.8 in the upgrade process.  Everytime I go to software update it wants me to purchase the OS for 20 bucks.  We never recieved a CD with the original macmini and thunderbolt storage server.

Thanks in advance for any help.

So your Mac Mini came preinstalled with Mountain Lion, correct?

Since you no longer have a Recovery HD on the Mac Mini, the only way I know to get ML back on is to restart the Mac Mini with Command+R+Option keys pressed/held until you see a white screen with a spinning globe. This will start Internet Recovery booting into the Apple servers. Make sure you have a WiFi or ethernet connection. This will boot to Apple's Recovery HD and present you with the OS X Utilities screen which will allow you to download and install ML that came with your system.

After you install ML whether to an internal or external drive, you would benefit from using the OS X Recovery Disk Assistant which will copy the ML Recovery HD to a USB thumb drive. This way you always have a way to redownload and install ML.

I'm not clear on exactly what you're trying to do, but note that any machine that shipped with 10.8 is completely incapable of running a system as old as 10.6.8. That older system simply doesn't have the hardware support for anything that shipped with 10.8.

So that leads me to believe that you had some other machine that shipped with 10.8, and that the older Mac Mini is now taking its place for some reason. It's important to understand, though, that the system that ships with a machine is not transferrable to other machines. You can only install 10.8 on that older Mini if you purchase it through the App Store.

I had an old mac server running 10.6.8 but it is failing so we purchased a new macmini preinstalled with 10.8.1 and thunderbolt storage server.

Since we have over 1200 network users and profiles we wanted to copy the old mac server with carbon copy to the new macmini.  Once we did that everything worked correctly but now we don't know how to get the server back to ML without losing all our DNS/OD/AFP/users/ settings.

I hope i'm a little clearier that time haha.

Thanks for the quick responses guys.

I think this may be over my head since I'm assuming you're running 10.6.8 Server and you want to put ML and OS X Server on without losing the settings you mentioned.

So you actually copied the old 10.6.8 system over onto the new Mini? Was that a brand new Mini, with 10.8.1 on it right out of the box, or was it a used machine that the former owner had installed 10.8.1 on? If the former, I'm frankly amazed that it will boot using that old 10.6.8 system! In that case, there must have been far fewer hardware changes to the Minis than other lines of hardware. Still, I don't think it would be wise to use 10.6.8 on that machine.

As to installing Mountain Lion, you may have destroyed the hidden recovery partition when you cloned the old drive to the new one. However, you should still be able to use internet recovery mode, by holding down command-option-R at startup. This will boot from Apple's servers and allow you to reinstall Mountain Lion. I'm honestly not sure how that will work on top of a 10.6.8 system. You may have to erase the hard drive and reinstall ML fresh, or it may install right on top of 10.6.8, just like the version from the App Store would. This is kind of unfamiliar territory for me, and for most people here I would imagine!

After using the command--option--R at startup and putting 10.8.1 over the top of the 10.6.8 it appears that it merged correctly.

    Thanks very much
