Yellowish hue on left side of screen on iPad 4 does anyone else have this?

I have noticed on a white screen the color temparature is a lot yellower on the top left-hand corner. I hoped the offer of o/s 6.1 update may have cured, as being a software issue. It is a new device, been on for 3 hours to see if color evens out but to no avail. I had the new iPad, which I sold to have the faster processor, but now feel that was an error. Does this problem fade? I am using a much cheaper Galaxy tab 2, belonging to my Wife, it too has an IPS display, much lower resolution agreed, but has a total white uniformly distributed background.

There is already a rather long thread in this forum about yellow discoloration in the retina displays for the iPad.

There and other places I've read that the Samsung displays do not exhibit this discoloration but that a small percentage the ones from LG do.  I've also read that the iPad '4' uses LG as a sole source.  Rumors, not fact.

If you really can't live with the discoloration give Apple a call.  I know that when my iPad '3' exhibited the problem they immediately replaced it and the new one does not have the problem.

I'm giving my iPad '3' to my daughter and getting a new iPad which is due at my house next week.  Crossing my fingers that I don't have the problem.

I read that the yellowish hue is due to manufacturing chemicals which eventually evaporate. My wife's iPad 3 which I purchased for her back in June, had the yellow hue, but it has completely disappeared.

I've read that, too, but it sometimes takes so long to disappear that you can no longer exchange it if the color doesn't disappear with time.  Since it's difficult to know for sure just what is causing the defect I'd still exchange it within the allowable time frame if it isn't a major hassle to do so.

Care to post a picture or two of the alleged yellowish hue? Are you sure you're not looking at it wrong?

iPad 4th Gen - no problem here.

First, it is not an 'alleged' yellowish hue, it is a confirmed problem.  Just read this thread. It started up immediately after the first iPad '3' units started arriving and continues to be active.

I don't currently have an iPad that exhibits the problem.  I ordered my '3' as soon as it was available.  When it arrived it had very bad yellowish discoloration running from top to bottom on the left hand side (portrait mode).  At that time there were many reports and many people posted pictures.  Mine was even worse than shown in a lot of those posted pictures--the problem on mine was very pronounced.  I exchanged it immediately and received absolutely no push back from Apple.  The replacement had a perfect display.

When my wife purchased her iPad '3' a couple of months later it did not have the problem.

Our new iPad '4's are due in on Monday.  We'll see then.  Hopefully they will be OK.

Actually, they arrived today.  Here's the 'yellow hue' results:

64GB LTE AT&T iPad 4 Black--very distinct yellow hue down the camera side in landscape mode.  Extends to just past the middle of the display.  Very obvious and totally unsatisfactory. I'll give it a bit of time to 'clear up' but if it does not the unit will have to be replaced.

64GB LTE AT&T iPad 4 White--slight yellow hue across the top of the display in landscape mode with camera to the left.  Extends about 1/5 of the way down the display.  Not objectionable but not nearly as 'yellow hue' free as the two iPad '3's I'll be giving to my kids.

I saw this a few times when I was on the bad iPad 3 display lottery.  I actually never did get a perfect display.  I finally got one without the yellow, but it ended up having uneven backlighting on the left side, near the top.  I don't really notice it too much now, and it was definitely the best out of all the screens I saw.  And I saw all sorts of pretty bad screen flaws.

I keep hearing about the yellow being glue that has to dry.  While this is true on the iPhone, it does not appear to be the same case with the iPad 3 (and presumably 4).  There was a teardown when the iPad 3 first came out, and it indicated that the screen is not glued.

I kept one of the yellow ones for almost a month.  It was yellowish on the left side, more toward the bottom, but also a bit on the top.  Over that month period, it did not change a bit.  It was just as yellow the day I returned it as it was on the day I got it.

Your mileage may vary, but watch it carefully, and consider your last day to return it.  If it starts to fade, good deal. If not, it would be a good idea to try a swap.  Unless you want to live with it.

After two days of extensive use the yellow hue hadn't changed at all so I decided to replace the unit.  My wife is totally happy with hers--in fact, until I pointed it out she had no idea anything was wrong with the display on her white iPad 4--so she'll be keeping it.

I just finished a telephone call with AppleCare support and thought I'd post the results here.

First, the person I spoke with was very professional.  There was absolutely no pushback and the only question asked other than those about my address and credit card info was for me to describe the defect in detail.  I was set up for express replacement wherein they place a hold (not a charge) on my CC until they get defective unit back and they pay shipment both ways.  I should have the replacement by Wednesday, 11/21 at the latest.

    I asked two questions.

First, was this a widespread problem as it was in March and the tech said my call was the first one he has handled dealing with a defective display in the 4th generation iPad.

Second, what happens if the replacement is bad, too.  I was told I had two options, first, continue the replacement 'cycle' until I received a good unit or second, ask for a refund.

When I went through this process in March the replacement was perfect in every way.  I'm hoping that holds true this time.

The replacement is perfect.  No problems at all.
