Try the standard fixes to rule out a software problem:

    - Reset. Nothing is lost

Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at

least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

    - Restore from backup

    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod

if still problem that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

Also, in the future, use the standard  black font. It is very hard to read the color font you used.

I have the same or a very similar problem. It just started this morning.

Everything works as expected when the headphones are plugged in, so no problem there.

I get no sound from the speaker, and no option to increase / decrease the volume when pushing the side buttons. When I double press the home button and navigate to the volume control, there is no option to adjust the volume.

But, I can set an alarm and get sounds from the speaker and adjust the volume, I can also adjust the volume when I am running and app called 'Chirp', so the speaker is working, but only in these two cases.

I have done a Reset, Restore - from backup and new iPod, but no change.

Any ideas on anything else I could try ?

I bet your ipods think they are plugged into a dock, when they really aren't.  If you plug it into a speaker dock does it work?  If so, it's probably a hardware issue, actually a port issue...  Maybe the port got damaged, or some food got into it.  I've ran into this issue two times now.  I have yet to figure out how to resolve it, if I figure this one out, I'll let you know.  Thanks

I had the exact same problem!! Try connecting your ipod to a dock for speakers and turning on the music then pulling the ipod out of the dock while the music is still playing. It might take a couple tries but it eventually worked for me where the music continues playing and you get the volume back. Good luck!!

Kjace, did you notice that the post is almost two years old? I think the poster resolved it by now.
