Make sure Shuffle is not turned on via Settings -> Shuffle.

When shuffle is off, it goes to the older episode (it goes backwards), I want it to go on to the next (newer) podcast episode automatically.

Then create a playlist of the podcasts sorted from oldest to newest and sync that to your device.

Unlike the iPod Touch, the iPod Classic (for some strange reason) only plays Podcasts in reverse order! There have been several posts about this in the past.
To get your iPod Classic to play Podcasts in the correct order you need to do as B-Rock suggests, make a Playlist with them in the order you want. They play them with no shuffle.
As the owner of both a Classic and an iPod Touch, I can vouch for the fact that if the Classic is on Shuffle, then when a Podcast episode ends, the player will stop. Shuffle must be turned off before you start a Podcast playing. Turning it off after the episode begins will not work.
