Q: how do I do a scan for viruses

I clicked on a link in an email from someone I knew.  Turns out it wasn't from that person.  Now when I go on google, the computer downloads.  I clear the download history.  I would like to know how to scan to see if I have contracted a computer virus, and clean it up.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    What does it download?

If you have applied the latest security updates it is most unlikely that you have picked up any sort of malware that is affecting your computer.

I did a reset Safari, clear history, got rid of all the cookies.  So far, it hasn't done it again.  What it had downloaded were two files that I hadn't hit "download now" for.  All I had done was open safari.  I didn't recognize either file, so

I cleared the history.  I had always applied all updates, so I guess it's okay.  Thank you for your answer.
