Podcasts should sync without issues... are there any error messages?
Books, are we talking audio books or iBooks?
Audio books should sync without issues. iBooks will only work on iOS devices.

No error messages on the podcasts, and it was iBooks. Thanks, diesel vdub.

With the iPod connected to your iTunes Library, look on the Device/Podcasts pane (tab) and select the Sync Podcasts button. Note also, the various syncing options for Podcasts. Then press Sync.
By the way, the Classic is still a leading and very useful iPod. It has far greater capacity than the iPod Touch. My 100GB music collection won't fit onto a Touch, so I have a 160GB Classic. I admit though, that I prefer the iPod Touch for Podcasts, and the Apps of course! So I own both, and I know I'm not the only one.
So that's why the Classic is still avaliable and why people actually buy it!

actually, I want to buy the Classic for its 160GB capacity - but I also want to instal a home-made app on the device as well. Does anyone know if it is possible to install an app on to the Classic? If not I'll have to wait for the Galaxy S3 64 + 64 model to come out and that could be ages! thanks

It is not possible, either on a Classic on an iPod Touch.
