Can not follow what you are trying to do, but it does not sound like a supported use of ATV. Using AirPlay like that is always going to provide quesitonable results at best. You might try making sure the video is full screen. And by the way most comerical content will not be able to be displayed this way. The DRM restrictions prevent the video from being shown.

I recently upgraded a 2007 Core 2 Duo mini to a 2012 Core i5.
I used Airparrot in the Core 2 Duo mini to stream to ATV 2, you have to use medium quality in preferences. I also liked to use the extended desktop, gave me better results. Anyway you always get some lag, but did the job.
Now with the Core i5, I don't have any issues with Airparrot or Airplay mirroring. Is flawless on both. I prefer to use Airparrot over Airplay mirroring, simply because of the extended desktop option. I can put eye TV 3 on the extended desktop, and keep working on the mini.
I don't have ATV 3, so I don't know is results are different.

Andy: And by the way I have both the new mini and ATV 2 on wi-fi, connected to Airport Extreme.
