I recently upgraded my son's phone to a iphone 4. I am receiving all of his test messages and if he downloads an app, it appears on my phone as well. Is this an icloud setting or is it because of something with my provider? I'm confused.

Because you and your son have the same ID account in iCloud. Your son should have his own iCloud account which he would sign into using his iPhone 4.

It is because you are sharing an Apple ID/iTunes account.

You can turn off automatic downloads at Settings > iTunes & App Stores

Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive and remove entries that belong to your son. You will need to do the same thing on his phone so he does not receive your messages.
