Mac OS X 10.7.5  Everytime I click on an icon the computer takes about 1-2 minutes to run the command.  Checked the activity monitor and nothing seems to be taking up a bunch of memory. This is my first Mac and I am lost at this point.  I got rid of my PC beause of problems like this.

Can you tell us how much RAM  (Memory) you have? It's listed by clicking on the  in your title  bar....go to About This Mac and it's in the 1st window.

We would also like to know what size hard drive you have and how much free space is on it.

If you click on your Hard drive icon (should be upper right hand corner of your screen), or the Finder in your Dock...when the window opens it says at the bottom how much Free Space you have on your drive.

If you go to the , click on About This Mac, click on More Info... in that window. The next window says how big your hard drive is under Hardware....click on Serial-ATA.....look under Capacity:

We need to know this cause if a hard drive is too full it slows things down and creates operational difficulties.

it would be best just to reset your computer, back up all your files to an external, and reset, then move your files back and watch the magic

Hi Lisatuck! Does it say 2.22GB free space when you click on your hard drive or in the finder? If so, that is way too small an amount of free space for a 999.86GB drive. Best would be 99 to 150GB free (10 to 15% as a general guide). Your Mac will have all sorts of issues with so little free.  In what other area does it say 627Gb available please?  Dale

    Hey Dale

I have a similar problem but my mac doesn't take that long, it does actually take a number of seconds to open a file or a program. I have about 38 GB free space. It used to work with about 6 GB free space before until I could empty more. N my Safari is even slower. Do I need to reset?!!

    Any clue?!

    Thanks a lot

If your Macbook is the flash memory type, you need to keep a substantial amount of memory free at all times (I recommend more than half at least) or it will run even slower than Windows! My advice is to keep all your data and non-OS related files/documents on external drives! That seems to be working for me, I recently switched from WIndows to Mac as well...

    Nonsense.

You are obviously having significant problems with your Mac. If you are interested in solving it, please post a new question.

Thank you... I don't have any problems with my Mac, it's running just fine! However, prior to purchasing it, several of the reviews of Macbooks with flash memory recommended to keep lots of flash memory free! A good Architect recommended the same thing as he had to remove a lot of content from his new Macbook after it got slow due to low memory... It does make sense, Mac is robust but it's not magical...how much memory exactly it needs for fast optimal operation I will find out soon enough!
