Over the air updates require iOS 5.0 or higher, thus you will have to first update using iTunes on your computer, then the setting to update over the air will appear. Launch iTunes, connect your phone, on the Summary Pane, hit the "Check for Updates" button. Back up ALL of your data first...perform a sync & make sure all iTunes content is in your iTunes library. Then update your phone.

You can simply update it through itunes by plug in the usb cable cord from your iphone to your laptop or desktop, then wait for a few seconds until it reads up and recognized your device. Now you will see the check for updates icon just select that one and it will surely update your iphone. Make sure that you have an internet connection when you do this.

iOS version prior to ios 5 do not include a way to update the iOS over the air on the device itself. You must use iTunes on the computer you normally sync with to complete the update.
Start iTunes on your computer and use the menu to check for updates. If an update to iTunes is available download and install it.
Then start iTunes on your computer and connect your iPhone. Select your iPhone in the left column of iTunes and select General in the right column. Scroll down to find Check for Updates.
