You either have faulty new battery or new battery is not compatible with your iPhone 3GS. Another feature of incompatible battery is Error 28 with iTunes Restore. Finding compatible battery for iPhone 3GS is very difficult. Look at Original battery that came with iPhone and get same APN# (Apple Part Number). Some have had good results with APN# 0435 if they do not know Orignal number.
iPhone 3GS has very labile LCD circuitry, so make sure iPhone 3GS is OFF during any repair.

Yes, that would be a good next step. Restore and if fixed done. If you get Error 28, it would answer incompatibility question. If still only charging and battery problem would point to faulty battery.

I decided to pop the old battery in as i know with my luck the factory restore would propably cause me another issue as my pc is playing up , hopefully things will work better now, although the hard reset function doesnt work for some reason. Thanks again for the advice

Just to correct my posts above, the Error given with iPhone 3GS for incompatible battery is Error 29.
