Problem: Selection of Inspector > Cell Format > Date and Time  . . . and any empty cell will display the Inspector Menu with a date of "01/05/09" (with special emphasis on the year).  If any cell in the first three rows is selected, the Inspector Menu will display a date, formated similar to that in the cell, again using the date "01/05/09" in the same format at the cell . . . but if a formating change is attempted in the third row, the format and date will change to the selected format and to "01/05/12" . . . compare the two examples below.

This problem appeared when I downloaded a CSV file from a bank with a column of dates.  I wanted to convert the date formats by selecting the column, Select Inspector >Cell Format > Date and Time > MM/DD/YY . . . . and each cell in the column converted to "01/05/12"

    Papa,

I'd like to see an example of your raw CSV data that causes the problem. Just guessing, but it could be that your dates are incomplete and the current year is being substituted for a missing year in the input string.

    Hi Jerry-

Below is a table of the first two columns of the CSV data sent by the bank after I click on the downloaded file which opens automatically by MS Excel.

Since I have switched from Excel to Numbeers, I normally drag the CSV file from the download file directly to the Numbers icon on the Dock and the file is opened in Numbers . . . I have inserted the Numbers file below the Excel file usinng the Copy/Paste routine.  Ignoring the appearance differences between the two pasted tables, note the formating difference in the dates.

The next problem, will be when using the Numbers table, to reformat the dates to the preferred "MM/DD/YY"  . . . when I try this, the reformating happens as expected . . . but the date changes to 01/05/12 in all cells in the first column. . . . HELP!  What have I done to create this?

    Papa T,

I don't see any reason for the problem, and I've never seen it here. You may send me copies of the files if you wish, and I'll try here.  I assume that you have tried again from the beginning just to make sure it isn't one corrupted file.
