Q: digital camera raw compatibility update

Hi,

I've just installed Aperture on a new Mac Mini (2.3 GHz i7) from the App Store (previously I was using it on my 13" mid-2010 Macbook Pro). After importing my library, Aperture is not able to open Sony RX100 raw files (I can open the same file on the MBP). On the Mini, Aperture version is: 3.4.2, Digital Camera RAW 4.00 - Build 658.4, however, on the MBP the version of Digital Camera Raw is 4.01. I've dowloaded the latest RAWCameraUpdate4.pkg from Apple, but cannot install it - "Alert: This software in not supported on your system."

Any idea how to solve this? (Already tried to remove/reinstall Aperture and Iphoto, and all the available OS X updates were installed.)

Thanks,

Gabor

Mac mini, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

The Sony RX-100 was added by RAW 4.01, so it makes sense that the Mac mini is not letting you open RX100 files, but it definitely doesn't make sense that the Mac mini isn't allowing you to upgrade to RAW 4.01, since it should have Mountain Lion, given that it's a newer machine.

Double-check to make sure you have OS X 10.8.2 or OS X 10.7.5 on the Mac mini.

Is Aperture in the Applications folder, and named simply Aperture?

Is iPhoto installed, and if so, what version?

    iPhoto'11, version 9.4.2 (710.42)

    Yes, it's named simply Aperture.

RAW Camera update was downloaded from http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1604

    Thanks,

Have you tried going through Software Update in the System Preferences?

Also, in About this Mac what is the build number of this 10.8.2?

Yes, multiple times, after reboot as well.

Also tried Repair permission with Disk Utility.

OK, I succeded to install, with some "hack"... (maybe my Mini is too new...)

After changing the ProductBuildVersion in /System/Library/CoreServices/SystemVersion.plist from 12C2034 to 12C1999, the RAW update installs and now I can open RX100 raw files in Aperture. (Changed back the original value after install.)

How I found this solution: expanded the RAWCameraUpdate4.pkg with pkgutil, then saw in "Distribution" file that this value is checked...

Only do this for your own risk...

Sounds like an OS issue. You might want to try reinstalling the 10.8.2 combo update from here: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1581

If that doesn't work, you might want to try reinstalling Mountain Lion from your recovery partition by holding down Command-R at launch, then either using the updater from the link above or Software Update/the App Store to update again to 10.8.2

    ---

Oop, looks like you already fixed it. I'd be curious if what I suggested works, however. Reinstalling the OS or performing the Combo Update might write over that file that prevented the install.

I have the exact same problem with a MacBookPro Retina.  I upgraded three Macs on the same day to 10.8.2 and updated all that I was prompted to, including Aperture & iPhoto.  The other two Macs ended up with Aperture 3.4.2 with Raw 4.0.1, but the MacBookPro ended with Aperture 3.4.3 and Raw 4.0.0.  I also have a RX100, and was quite perturbed when the raw files still were incompatible, having waited since late July for this update. I downloaded the 4.0.1, and got the "This software is not supported on your system." message.

Life's not supposed to be this hard...

I tried to download the combo update, but it would not let me install that either.  I tried to change the version from 12C3006 ot 12C1999, but it gave me an error when I tried to save it.

    Apple needs to fix this...

I posted a different version of the procedure to change the version number here. Try it and let us know if you have success.
