can't find an answer to this anywhere....if i connect a retina mbp and 2011 imac with a thunderbolt cable, i can use the imac as an external monitor for the retina mbp....apps on the imac would still be running in the background....do they still access the connected external HDs?

if i connect the mbp and imac via the thunderbolt passthrough port on my external thunderbolt pegasus array is the pegasus automatically connected to the mbp? and can the imac still access files in the background(backup, rendering,....) from it?
