Apologies for bumping this, everyone, but I could really use help with this. I need to figure out how to change the kind of table of contents in a template from the bizarre landscape version (which isn't really a table of contents) to the portrait version, which is a little more realistic.

Please, can someone answer this question? Is there a template somewhere that provides for a vertical, scrolling, useful TOC, instead of the cumbersome landscape TOC?

bookpubman, after hours and hours of experimentation I've determined that there is currently no way to change the table of contents. Unless you can find a specific custom template someone has created (I haven't been able to, but then, I haven't been able to find any free templates that work -- I haven't tried any of the ones you pay for) we're out of luck.
In some ways, iBooks Author is an amazing program. In a lot of ways, it is horribly, horribly deficient.

Just saw this post. Basically, the TOC in IBA presents content in a different way than traditional ebooks. Many developers are struggling with that. I often add a manual TOC as part of the first page of the book I develop. This gives me a little more control over how to present the TOC. However, users will not be able to access my manual TOC directly since the "Table of Content" link menu takes them to the built-in one.

Thanks, sb0117, and your comments were corroborated by one of the authors of the book, Publishing with iBooks Author, which is available through the iBooks Store, but not created with iBooks Author.
Frustrating trying to get a simple, functional TOC in iBooks Author.
Can you tell us where we can view your book or someone else's with a manual TOC? I've got a pretty good idea how to design one, but it might help to see how someone else did it.
