Are accessing a file that is a Master (original) for Aperture, and altering it in Photoshop? That is a no-no. What format was the original in, and in what format was it Saved after the crop?

I'm opening the raw file in Aperture, selecting to edit with PS5, and then saving the image after my PS5 work. I've done this hundresds of times.
When the image tries to reload into Aperture, after the PS5 save, then it is being reported by Aperture as an unsupported image file.
When I find the imagr in Finder, then reopen through photoshop, it's fine.
This has happened toninght only, and not on every file I've used - ie it's intermittent.

Same experience here. I was using Aperture since v1 and always used Photoshop as a external editor. I opened the developed RAW files in PS, worked in there and saved them. That worked flawless for literally thousands of times.
Suddenly, Aperture start throwing those "unsupported image format" errors upon me. This is a ******** for I can easily save the PS CS6 PSD-Files on the desktop and then drag them into Aperture and it reads them just fine.
A no-no to use CS as an external editor? On what grounds do you base that, Ernie???
It is NOT about the file format. It is about Aperture not being able to handle the CS6 (or CS x) written files directly. At least not all the time. This bug was introduced in one of the latest revisions of Aperture.

Not sure what you think I have said? I use Photoshop CS5 all the time as the External Editor for Aperture. But Aperture has always been designed to send, per preference choice, either a .psd or .tiff file to Photoshop. Never, ever the RAW original.
I know of others who are similarly using Photoshop CS6 with Aperture. Please clarify your workflow.

Ernie, I misread your post indeed. I never saw a option to send RAW files to an external editor. All I can see is the option to chose what editor and then specify if PSD or TIFF is used. I always use PSD, usually 16bit and in one other installation in 8bit (due to RAM restrictions there).
So Aperture creates the PSD version and PS edits that very version and saves it back into aperture. This is where I sometimes () get that "unsupported image" problem.
I think this also is what Mike does: select a RAW master, use an external editor -> Aperture creates a PSD or TIFF. I haven't tried the TIFF option , though.
My main point was: it all worked for a very long time and with the latest updates it is broken.
have a good day.

Anyone have some news on that problem. I still get that problem maybe 10% of the time I use Aperture -> Edit with external editor (PS CS6). Aperture won't even let me easily identify the file in its internal structure, so extracting the file and reimporting it, which ALWAYS solves the problem, is a PITA.
Somehow Aperture is really sucking on this problem.
