Q: Constant Kernel Panics on OS X Mountain Lion.

Hello,

I've been experiencing constant kernel panics since installing Mountain Lion.

The panics sometimes happen every couple hours to happening as soon a I boot up, thus leading me to restart and trapping me in a constant rebooting because of kernel panics.

Can anybody spot what is going wrong, based on the diagnostic that is provided to me?

The names shown in the panic report are those of the actual extensions as they have been loaded. The items in the extensions folder are Packages, each of which may contain multiple extensions, possibly with different names.

Therefore, the best way to un-Install is to use the Un-Installer provided by the software manufacturer. in some cases, this may require you to download the package again to get a fresh copy of the un-Installer.

I've been having the same NVIDIA related crashes as many others have reported since upgrading to Mountain Lion.  Have installed  the NVIDIA CUDA 5.0.36 for Mac Release driver which supports the GeForce GT 330M graphics in my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro.  I use my MacBook Pro with external monitors so "d" graphics mode is my only choice.

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/cuda-mac-driver.html

I hope this solves the problem.  If not, I'll head to the Apple Store for the hardware upgrade.   I'll probably buy a 15" Retina as a backup machine since I can't do without my MBP for more than a few hours since it is my primary and only work machine.

Have others experiencing the crashes installed the 5.0.36 driver on Mountain Lion 10.8.2?  Did crashes continue or stop?

After installing the NVIDIA CUDA 5.0.36 driver on my machine I have NOT had the NVRM read error for 3 full days.  Previous to installing this driver I was crashing several times a day.

Interestingly, I never had this crash until upgrading to Mountain Lion.  So on my machine, whatever causes the hardware error didn't happen on Lion and does cause the crash on Mountain Lion.  Maybe I will still get a crash on Mountain Lion with the NVIDIA driver installed. But for the time being I'm happy not having my machine crash for 3 days of fairly hefty use running OS X and virtualized Windows 7 under Parallels and running two 27" Apple Cinema HD Displays, one driven by the NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M card and the other with a DisplayLink USB to DVI adapter.

The temp on my machine has gotten as high as 190 degrees F.  according to smcFanControl.  The usual temperature is around 145 degrees F.

So far it looks like I'm unique in enjoying stability with the installation of the NVIDIA driver.  If I do get a crash, I will immediately post here.  Otherwise, I'm running just fine since the evening of November 10, 2012.

I can attest to the fact I've now had two kernel panics when viewing Flash video in Safari 6.0.1.

Other, possibly unrelated, issues are glitches in Safari rendering (block redraw offset errors, unexplained duplicate redraws) and problems running three screens off two identical graphics cards including blanked/blacked out screens (except for the cursor) in all applications, including the Finder.

All since upgrading to Mountain Lion two weeks ago.

I'm beginning to wonder if this problem is an incompatibility between Mountain Lion OSX 10.8.2 and my graphics cards – 2 x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB graphics cards.

Have just read the post above my reply (the reply was to another post on another page and hence I didn't see it).

I am now installing the NVIDIA CUDA 5.0.36 driver for Mac OS to see if it fixes the problem.

The Kernel panic happens a lot when i use Chrome, i have the gfxCardStatus installed and when i start chrome it automatically switches to the NVIDIA chipset and few minutes later kernel panic.

I have alos noticed that when i plug in a external monitor or TV i am able to watch a movie without a problem but when i start chrome it would make it panic again.

I did install the new NVIDIA driver but it did not change anything i still get panics.

When i took mbp to Apple store they ran diagnostic and told me the only option is to replace the logic board which will cost $300 - $400. He also mentiones that apple is aware of a similar issue and has issued a extended warranty on certain models of mbp mid 2010.

I might have to take it again to the genius bar to get it looked at maybe now mine will qualify for the free replacement.

My machine crashed earlier today.  So with NVIDIA CUDA 5.0.36 installed I went 5 days without a crash.  So the new driver must use the NVIDIA hardware in a way that doesn't cause the heat problem as quickly as running with the driver that is part of OS X, but it doesn't fix the problem.  Ironically, the crash occurred when I was on the Apple web page scheduling an appointment to get my machine's logic board replaced!  I did drop by the local Apple Store and in less than 5 minutes they confirmed the problem and ordered a logic board.  It should arrive in a day or two and the local store will do the logic board swap.  So if you are getting this crash, go get your logic board replaced.

after getting 2-3 KP's a day and unable to get any graphics erros on ASD, I brought it to the Genius bar and got the logic board swapped (had to go back again and put my original HD/superdrive in place of my upgraded HD/SSD after bringing it in initially, genius I don't like decided to take over my repair).

3 days later and no KP.  I had issues on 10.8.2 both before and after the NVidia upgrade was performed, so others will probably have the same experience.  Those without applecare or expired applecare, I hate to say it but you're probably not going to like the end result...

    Hi all,

Most of you guys seem to be using MacBook Pros but I've been having regular kernel panics on wake from sleep with my iMac 27".  I never had them before upgrading to Mountain Lion, and I'm currently running the latest OS X 10.8.2.  I only get the panics on wake from sleep - never had one any other time, in fact I've never actually witnessed the panic occurring at all.  I always find the iMac on the login screen after having rebooted, and when I login I get a dialogue box informing me of the restart with the option of reporting it to Apple.

My panic reports look quite similar to the one quoted in an earlier post above by vAesthetic (at least to my untrained eye).  I'd be grateful if anyone could advise if my case also looks like a hardware problem, and if there's anything I could do to help diagnose it.

    Many thanks,

    Rob

That does look like the previous AMD one. You don't have any non-Apple kernel extensions loaded, though, so this problem should be all Apple's problem.

You may want to run Apple Hardware Test, but false negatives are common.
