I have a first generation ATV, but I no longer have a TV.  We view everything on our 30" Cinema Display right from our Mac Pro.

Question is: How can I update/sync the ATV w/o using a screen interface?  I am sure there are updates needed and I can't see it in itunes as a device (thought I could maybe update from there).

My goal is to use the ATV to output to a Bose music only.

Apple TV is meant to be connected to a TV. If you only need to stream music Airport express is the product of choice. However, the 1st generation model was discontinued a long time ago and there have been no further updates.

Same thing. The only way to update is through a tv or a monitor. (You just need to see what you are clicking on) If you have a hdmi to whatever pc connection or the color rainbow wires you can connect it. There has not been an update to it since just after ver2. If you are just doing music like i do you really do not need to update it. there really is no gain. The only reason is to connect to you wifi or network and itunes.

Connecting it to a pro will be tough since i do not think there is any type of video in port

then it sounds like you need to see what it says on a tv. I have read that some people have problems with the new itunes but not many. If it is steady something is wrong. on stat up it blinks orange then you hear the music and it turns white. Best idea is to hook it up and see. How long do you wait? You may need to give it some time to get on your network. (is it new or old network) If you are not using a network or anything,  try a reset

See if this link will work to the guid

As mentioned there is no other way to update. 3.0.2 is the latest update, which was put out almost 3 years ago. It sounds like you may have a hardware issue at any rate. Either find a monitor to connect to in order to diagnose or take the unit in.
