If you control-click on your iPhoto Library and select "Show Package Contents" there should be a folder in there named "Masters" - it should have all of your his-res photos in it.
Not certain why you're having problems just opening iPhoto - you may want to take your question to the iPhoto forum - where all of the iPhoto experts hang out.

What version of iPhoto do you have? Is your profile saying taht you have OS X 10.6.8 correct?
What does happen - does iPhoto open with no photos, does the iPhoto icon just bounce in the dock, we need to have exact symptoms and information

Yes 10.6.8. It just bounces in the dock. Will not open. Says application not responding then I have to force close.

I'm not sure what update you had since it has been a long time since there were any updates to iPhoto '09 but Back up your iPhoto library, Depress the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library
Start with the first then the third and the fourth opeion until it is fixed
