I've recently bought a mac computer with Mountain Lion pre-installed. I haven't received a dvd of the OS though. How can i re-install the system without the DVD (given that i already have the license)?

Lion and ML aren't available via DVD. You use the recovery mode to reinstall.

Details for this abysmal delivery system in Recovery and About Lion Recovery. Also, see the Internet Recovery.

Go to the App Store and buy it. App store icon should be in your dock. You will need your Apple ID and password.

    Cheers

As petermac said, you will need to buy Mountain Lion for your other machine - the reason being is that the license for the pre-installed Mountain Lion is for that particular machine only, so you need to buy it for another machine.

thank you both for your replies.

Actually the OS was installed by the seller, he just didn't sent me the OS seperately . Any way to avoid purchasing the same OS again?

Unfortunately not. You will not be able to ever reinstall because your Apple ID and the machine ID do not match. Since the OS is only available as a download, you will need to take care of it because you will need to reinstall at some point.

If the license was purchased at the Mac App Store, it is forever tied to the Apple ID used to purchase it. The seller is obligated to uninstall it and reinstall the original OS. So, if it originally had Snow Leopard on it, you will need to either contact the seller for the install disks or contact Apple and purchase Snow Leopard. Booting from the install disk will allow you to erase the drive and install Snow Leopard. After that, you can purchase Mountain lion.

And when i do (purchase the OS) will i be able to apply it over my two systems as an update (not install / format)?

No, since you need the original OS (I am assuming that was Snow Leopard, but that is just a guess - you need to check that), you will need to erase the drive: first because you cannot revert to an earlier system (no Mac can) without erasing the drive and second because you need to get rid of the current Mountain Lion because of the licensing issues.

So, the steps are: get Snow Leopard, boot from it, erase the drive, install. Update it to 10.6.8 and then purchase/install Mountain Lion. Depending on what personal files you have, back them up and copy them back over when you're all done, I would not suggest using Setup Assistant with Snow Leopard because you are going backwards and can't use some of the things from the current Mountain Lion. I'd wait until you're back on Mountain Lion - you could probably use Setup Assistant then (not 100% sure about that though in this case) or, just copy your files back.
