iPhone 5 short battery life?

    FYI there is _NO_ fix for this.  This is either a hardware problem with select phones or some very serious bug deeply ingrained in the iOS 6.0 & 6.0.1 operating system.  I have used my phone on various 3G networks in six different countries now.  I exchanged the phone once and I have done a DFU restore and tried the phone wiht no apps and iCloud disabled.  The horendous battery drain is the same every time always no matter what if cellular data is turned on.  Turrn cellular data off and battery life is fine.  Apple has really screwed their customers on this one.

    My battery has been eaten alive since I upgraded to 6.0.1, and my data usage has also spiked. My phone waas getting extremely hot when it was in "sleep" in my pocket, it felt exactly the same as when I use my sat-nav on there, which led me to think it could be GPS related.

     

    I'm not sure if anyone else has done this, but it has solved both of the above problems for me....

     

    I went into Settings>Privacy>Location Services>System Services (Right at the bottom) and turned all of these off. I honestly don't think I will miss any of these.

     

    My phone no longer gets hot, battery is as good as it should be and my data allowance is not diving quicker than a premier league footballer. I know each user seems to have slightly different issues, but this definintely sorted mine out.

    My phone was on standby for 12 hours, usage of 1 hour 47 minutes and my battery was down to 64%! I used my 3g for an hour and it drained down to 21%! This is crazy!!

    I had my iphone for 2 days and it was draining at a rate of 1% for every 3 minutes.  In fact when i left it overnight it still drained at that rate and was dead (hence no alarm).  I looked up every forum did every battery saving technique (so no iphone functionality) and it was still awful and i needed to charge it 3 times a day.

     

    Went to the Genius store and after a very very long session they reluctantly replaced.  Last night battery went down 1%.  It charges faster, doesnt drain at an absurd rate and Ive also noticed the phone isnt as hot anymore! For info I use Push Exchange (corporate phone) have wirelsss and bluetooth on. 

     

    I knew something was wrong as people at work were not having the same issues on the same settings and got the phone the same day!  Thankfully the store replaced but at the end they still argued it was a software and not a hardware issue.

     

    Note, this is my first iphone.

    People posting pics of 10 hours of usage and 2 days of standby are definitely using their phone on WIFI and/or charging their phones in-between (but not to full)... At least thats the only way I can replicate the feat on both my iPhone 5s...

     

    I'm keeping my surfing to around 2 hours so that the phone can last through the day (avg. 2-3hrs usage, 10hrs standby)... reach home with less than 10% battery usually.

    After waiting a month for my iphone it finally came in  last wednesday and same thing with mine. I don't even go on it that much to save it and the battery percent goes down by the minute.. Is it just my phone or is it a software problem? I have had my iphone 3g for 3 years and my battery lasted throughout the day even on it's last leg. I never had the 4 so i can't compare that to the 5.

    Im having similar issues with my iPhone 5. I got it on Friday and thought it was just a new phone thing. I had iPhone 4 and it was never this bad. I used LTE for appz 10 minutes today just to use facebook chat and my battery died 30% during this time. I googled some quick fixes and one article advised that this issue is more prevalent in customers who have copied their old iPhone onto the new iPhone 5 and advised to reset settings. I have done so and nothing has changed. Hopefully they can figure this one out soon as im regretting my decision to upgrade at this point!

    After reading entries on Google and combing this forum for answers, I finally found a fix for this. I won't bother retyping what all the problems were because, if you're reading this page, you know what the issue is and all possible fixes that have been put out. I was having the battery issue just like everyone else.. the battery would drain ~3% per 5 minutes of use and would be gone within 2 - 3 hours.

     

    I turned off unwanted Notifications, locations services, iCloud and stuff that really wasnt needed/wanted.. (which I would have done anyway even if this battery issue never existed and you should too.) This didn't help a lot initially but:

     

    My battery starting running like it should when I turned off Weather Widget AND killed the background apps that were running.

     

    To kill the Weather Widget go to Settings>Notifications>Weather Widget.

     

    I was unaware that when you double the tap the Home button and the recent applications pop up, that you're able to close them by holding your finger on one of the apps.. (As if you were going to move them). My phone had every application that I had ever opened since the first power on, running in the background, Even after a complete power-off and restart. So I killed all of them except phone and messaging.

     

    Today my battery went 6 hours and only lost ~25%!! Which obvisously fixed the problem.

    However, I make sure that, everytime I open any app I:

    1. Close it like normal

    2. Double tap the home button

    3. Hold my finger on the app and completely close the app from running in the background.

     

    AND YES, this goes for all applications not just 3rd party ones. So I'll squash that now. 3rd party apps are not to blame for this issue. All apps including factory ones have a hand in this.

     

    This entire problem is software related, not hardware in my opinion. Doing the above fixed my problem and should for anyone else. I'm sure some people will say "Well I didn't have to do this for my Iphone 4."

     

    Well I don't know about that, because this is my first iPhone (aside from an Ipod Touch).

    All I can tell you is that I don't have a battery issue anymore after today...

    EDIT:

     

    I left out an important piece of info. I disabled LTE as well because I live in an area where LTE is almost non-existent. Even in an area where LTE is available, the iPhone will struggle to keep a good signal and that will devour battery life.

     

    Disable LTE unless you live in an area where your getting seriously good reception. This is a game-changer.

    This week I turned LTE on once. I made one phone call and set the phone aside for the rest of the evening. My phone was at 100 percent. When I picked it back up 4 hours later it had gone down to 27 percent while sleeping! I had 2 bars on LTE. My phone does swtich between LTE and 3g if the LTE signal is weak but, it wasn't switching at 2 bars, it only does that if it goes below 2.

     

    Yes, LTE is to blame though it should not be. However, when the phone is asleep it should not be draining to that extent. I'm really worried how bad this battery will get over time if this is how it is new.

     

    As for apps running in the back ground. No, I always close each one as soon as I am done and have never left anything running in the back ground. I am OCD that way and even with my other phones always closed all the apps when I was finished using one.

     

    I get "okay" battery with LTE off but, not great. And I say "okay" when I'm not doing "too much" I get fair battery life. If I dare to stream anything the battery drains like crazy still. I'm still having to recharge a lot more than with previous Iphones. My 4 had fantastic battery life.

     

    The update did not fix this issue for me. I will just keep LTE off though it's a pain not to have all the features and I suppose try not to use my Iphone 5 as much as I used my Iphone 4. This is not a real solution though. I was past the time for Virgin to take my phone back when the update came out. Only thing I can do is remember this issue when buying new products in the future. This should make the lines to get new Apple products on roll out down shorter.

     

    As far as someone saying this is happening to people who backed up from their old phone. I backed up my apps from Itunes. Then I reset the phone several times after that to try and solve this issue. Nothing worked.

     

    So now I will turn off weather widget. Any other functions this phone was supposed to have that need to be turned to "off"? This phone makes phone calls...an 800 or better dollar phone that makes calls. Could have bought something much less than this to do that with.

    Yea I agree. We shouldn't have to turn off anything on a phone to make it work. This is the first phone I've had where I basically have to turn it off to keep it on. This was a $350 phone for me, which is the max I would pay even if it was in perfect working order and no problems at all. I hate it for anyone who paid retail for it, but I'm sure they had their reasons.

     

    Anyway, this was my first posting on an Apple forum, hope it helped for the time being. Everything I wrote was just a quick fix for me. They still need to address the problem first off and find whatever is causing it.

     

    I personally think they don't want to address it because they will lose money obviously, but I also think its because of the post-Jobbs thing. I think people had a fleeting idea or expectation that something would go wrong with the phone because Jobbs isn't here to oversee it anymore. And that to address this problem would only confirm those expectations.. maybe causing people to lose a little faith in the company.

     

    I could be wrong but but I will say that, if what I said has any kind of merit, there's a bit of irony here. By not addressing the issue at all, I am losing faith, with a little hope sprinkled on top, that this issue and future products will get any better.

    I purchased a 5 last night. So far I've had to charge it twice and will have to again tonight. Only done a little web browsing. I changed from a 4. My 1st year I only charged every 4days then 2-1 1/2. So far I've had dropped calls and bad reception. I was excited now just disappointed.

    Ok so all 1 million of us have a problem w the 5's battery.  It *****. Case closed.  All the forums in the world aren't going to change it. I sold mine on eBay for $740.  Back to 4s. See you in 2013 iPhone 6...maybe

    Well, I won't be selling mine on ebay as my rating there is perfect and I'd hate for someone to say I sold them a "lemon" of a phone on my feedback. I sure won't be getting an iphone 6. I won't in fact be buying ANY newly launched products again at all.

     

    It's very disappointing that other than an update which did not fix this battery issue there has been no announcement from Apple as to how to correct this problem for so many people. I usually don't get overly dramatic about things but, I feel at this point ripped off. Apple obviously knows about this issue and at first with the previous update I did want to give a chance for the update to perhaps address this but, now? The update did not work, and this phone wasn't worth it. I will need something a lot more reliable to take when I volunteer in the backwaters of Jamaica. Sav La Mar is about as "modern" as it will get for me and I cannot have a phone like this in that environment. I'm sure digicel will have something temporary I can use that I wont need to worry about recharging in very demanding circumstances.

     

    It will be interesting to see how Apple handles this. There's an opportunity here to retain customers and to impress new ones. Without something official being released to deal with this, I'm afraid they are missing the boat. What a shame. "It Just Works" doesn't apply to the Iphone 5 at all.
