The first error notice stated: "The Library is malformed. Encountered unknown ampersand-escape sequence at line 7."

I printed out the library manager's instructions regarding corrupted files in "AlbumData.xml file" . Nothing in those pages has been of help.

True, I had named my external drive "Photos&Movies". My bad. Renamed it with "and" and nothing changed.

I followed every advice  given here to others with the same or similar problems, i..e.:

Re-installing original discs.

Mine - neither the two discs with Leopard 10.5 nor the one I purchased  with Snow Leopard - contain any repair features when choosing "Bundled only...".

Then I tried restoring from Time Machine which brought the iPhoto icon back into the Applications folder and the dock.Clicking on it, however, doesn't even make it jump or blink. I also temporarily disconnected the dedicated external drive with more than 11,000 photos on it to make sure they wouldn't accidentally be deleted.

Have also followed the advice of deleting "iPhoto plist" and "cache.db".

I installed Google Picasa to access my photos on the external and they're all there.

I had been led to believe that iLife was part of my original version of Leopard but I cannot find  any trace of it.

Short of buying a new computer, I would like to upgrade to the next level (Lion??) in hopes of getting iLife. Or buying a new version of iPhoto.

My subscription to Apple Care expired and I don't even know if re-subscribing would help me.

Thank you!

iLife does not come with any OS - it comes with new computers and upgrades are purchased

The version that came with your computer is on the restore disks that came with it

To reinstall iPhoto - go to your receipts folder ("Your hard drive" ==> library ==> receipts) and remove any iPhoto receipts and reinstall from the restore disks that came with your computer - do a custom install of bundled software only

For more information  <a href="http://www.macworld.com/article/132243/2008/02/pacifist.html"> click here for the MacWorld article on reinstalling OS X applications.</a>

You can purchase the latest version from the App store

You can purchase previous versions from eBay or Amazon

What format is the external drive? It must be Mac OS extended (journaled)

what is the name of the external drive now? does the finder show an iPhoto library there? If you depress and hole the option key and launch iPhoto do you see the iPhoto library there? can you see the one on the internal drive that you restored from TM?

    Larry:

    1) There were no restore disks with my newly purchased iMac.

    2) Could not find any receipts.

    3) The "Bundled Software" for custom install did not have any restore feature. One of the previous replies gave a screen print of what that feature looks like. My discs did not offer that choice.

    4) I have two sets of discs. One with Leopard and the other with Snow Leopard.  Tried your advice with both of them. Both put a lage iPhoto icon into the "A" folder on the dock but neither will open the program.

    5) Have used the external drive for over a year and do not know the format. I changed its name from

"iPhoto&Movies" to "iPhoto and movies" because of the ampersand error message.

    6) Finder does NOT show an iPhoto library but shows shows an item called "iphoto.app". Clicking on it brings me back to the email notification of  your reply. Clicking and holding Option key likewise does not open iPhoto.

    7) Yes, I have an iPhoto icon on my dock from my restore attempts now but it too will not open the app.

I understand from your statement above that iLife comes with new computers and upgrades. Since I purchased a new computer and one upgrade, should there not be one copy of iLife somewehre on the Mac drive?

Please tell me what I need to order from the App store since I have tried all of the previously given replies and none worked.

your answer is confusing - if you have iPhoto '08 and Mac OS X version 10.6.8 as your information states then your computer came with restore disks

a newly purchased Mac would have much later software than you say you have - and on new systems you do not get restore disks but accept yoru software from the App store

Again OS upgrades do not include iPhoto (or iLife) - the orginal restore disks that came with the comnputer do

iPhoto.app is the iPhoto application - the iPhoto library is a SQLite database file that contains your photos and all information allowing iPhoto to access them

You depress the option key and the launch the iPhoto App to get the menu that contains the select library command

    Larry,

I have just gone through a re-install with the original discs that came with the iMac. I took photos of each of the windows to show that there was no restore disk or feature that specifically said "restore disc".

I could not download these 15 screen photos to iPhoto from the camera because it does not launch. I used Picasa instead and grouped them into two consolidated panels. That changed them from jpg to png, a format not accepted by the little camera badge above.

None of the images shows any mention of a restore feature or a box giving me a choice which app to restore. The first photo I took clearly shows that I DO have v. 10.6.8 - even after the latest exercise of re-installing the original version that came with the computer.

As I mentioned before, pressing Option and the iPhoto icon on the dock has no effect not before nor after the re-install.

If it would help, I could also try a re-install from the upgrade discs that I received from the Store with the Snow Leopard version. The discs themselves do not specify the version but came in a box marked "Mac OS X Snow Leopard, new version 10.6.3". Apparently an upgrade was contained in one of the automatic ones issued occasionally due to which it is now version 10.6.8.

Please explain the steps I have to take before I insert them. Do I delete certain folders first? Oddly enough, disc 1 is called "For Mac Computers Mac OS X" and the other one "Mac Book, disc 2" under the Apple logo. On the bottom it gives the numbers 6150-A for disc 1 and 6175-A for disc 2.

I have no MacBook but the designation may not be of any importance.

Again OS upgrades do not include iPhoto (or iLife) - the orginal restore disks that came with the comnputer do

So do not use the OS upgrade disks - only the original disks taht came with your computer

To reinstall iPhoto - go to your receipts folder ("Your hard drive" ==> library ==> receipts) and remove any iPhoto receipts and reinstall from the restore disks that came with your computer - do a custom install of bundled software only

It may not be named 'restore disk" but you got two DVDs with your computer - it is disk two

    Thanks, Larry,

The solution was on the original Leopard INSTALLLATION discs, hidden under some layers where I found iPhoto. Subsequent versions of the cats require paying for iPhoto which to me is the most important part of the Apple "experience".

Need to import 11,000 photos from the external drive into Events as I had them before. When I went to "File-Import from Library", they're not being put back in the same order. I stopped importing after I saw how randomly they were placed.

Any instructions on how to proceed rebuilding the library as it was before? Or do I need to open another thread?

    Thanks again!

Are these just images? Or it it an iphoto library?

If they are just images then iPhoto have no possible wey to know how you have them arranged

If it is an iPhoto library then simply drag it to the pictures folder and lanch iPhoto to open it

The only way to be sure you get exactly what you had before is to load a backup of the iPhoto library
