Does this happen if you plug the Nano into another available USB port, preferbably one located on the backup of the PC and not through a front USB or hub? Otherwise, it might not hurt to also try another known working USB cable.
If there are any other USB devices connected, disconnect them (minus the keyboard and mouse) and then reboot the PC and reconnect the iPod. There could be driver conflicts or an overload on the PC's USB bus.

Thanks, As I said, my ipod is recognised in that it appears in the devices area. It is also in 'my computer'. I have tried different usb ports and nothing else is connected to my laptop except a mouse (easier than the pad) so I cannot believe there is overload. I have synced successfully several times before, it even synced once ok after upgrading to latest version of iTunes a week ago. Why does it find my ipod and recognise it should sync, then say it can't sync because it cannot find the ipod after all? Has anyone else experience this?

What is the exact wording of the error message you are getting from iTunes then when you try to sync?
What about another cable? Did you try that as well?

Thanks, I have tried again:
- Remove mouse from USB.
- Plug in ipod to one of 5 usbs on laptop.
- Message 'Syncing ipod - Do not disconnect' at top of page.
- 'Devices' shows my ipod name (xxx).
- I wait.
- Error message box appears with message 'The ipod "xxx ipod" cannot be synced because it cannot be found.
- OK to disconnect at top of page.
I only have the one (original) cable and I do not think connection is the problem otherwise my ipod plug in would not trigger itunes into starting to sync and showing its name in 'devices'.
My thoughts are that the itunes syncing software is not searching for the correct name. A bug?

It could still be the cable. There could be a broken/torn wire/connection that could only be working intermittenly allowing the iPod to still communicate with iTunes but not complete an entire sync operation.
Have you tried removing and re-installing iTunes and all Apple software following the instructions in this Apple support document?

Thanks again. I tried a different cable and also removing and reinstalling latest ITunes. Still same result. Have sent diagnostics to Apple several times but no response. Am I expecting too much?!
